As much I hate eBay, I have been shopping there for a deal on a Les Paul.
I found one I felt was acceptable, but since the auction ended in the wee hours of the morning, I put my best price in before I went to bed. When I went to bed, I was the high bidder. Of course I lost the auction (I usually do), but I only lost it by $.99. I bid $1200.01 and the winning bid was $1201.00.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there usually a requirement for the next bid to be $10 or $25 over the previous bid? If you use one of the sniping software methods, will that let you be only a dollar over the previous bid? This was a no-reserve auction if that makes a difference.
I hate eBay...but I keep going back.

I agree with the Auctionsniper idea - I've used it for a long time. If you can't be there, a sniping service is the ONLY way to go.
The increments very depending on the auction - you simply got outbid, probably in the last 15 seconds.

So I sent the guy the money to the address he gave me via money order (as he requested) and the guy claimed he never got the check. Then when I confirmed the address with him (copy and pasted from his email) he said 'why did you send it to that address? I don't live there. It should go to this address.' I cancelled the check and got my money back. Then the guy hit me up like a week later, after I already told him I'm pulling my money out of this deal, complaining that the check that I sent him didn't work. That was my only experience with ebay. |

Luckily I was able to trade it off to someone for someone worth even more, so in the end: I win, eBay loses.

I only use BuyItNow on eBay. I don't have the attention span to 'win' an auction. |

The winning bid was for a max of $1201.00. Your bid failed to beat it because it was not $10 more (only 1200.01). There was no way you could know that that other bid's max was 1201, but if you'd noticed it then, you would have definitely won if you had only put in 1211. |

It's kind of a goofy auction. I was a little hesitant because the seller talks more about himself than he does about the guitar.
FWIW...

Kind of like how craigslist has went from a good source for local deals to a haven for scammers and murderers.
