Has anybody just quit their job, packed up and moved to a new town with no real plan or anything? How does one do it?

Helps to have shelter lined up. Go from there

It isn't really that developed yet as far as business goes so jobs would be hard to find and the same with living. Houses are either super expensive or already occupied.
I would probably end up living under the overhang outside of walmart for a couple weeks with all of my belongings on the sidewalk.

I haven't quite chucked everything in and just moved, but this was pretty close. I got the job first knowing that I could afford to move elsewhere, then once I got the job I looked for a place close to where I would be working. Found a place at the right price and everything is working out OK.
I'd recommend at least see if there is work for you in your new town and secure a job first, then ther rest is easy. Particularly if you are looking at renting a place as most landlords won't accept your application unless you can at least show you are employed.

Of course, i don't give a **** about my field, but my marketable skills are few and I could never make early as much money in something else. I wish I could just psyche myself up and convince myself that money doesn't matter. My job is really the only thing keeping me here...

Def. don't use your savings just to live off of for a year, that's crazy...
Check on-line for job/apartment openings for the new place you want to move...go there for a weekend and see if you really like the place...make sure they have good bars, restaurants, and music stores...

You can look for new jobs in other cities while working at your current job. Once the opportunity arrives, you can blow town.
Depending on your field/career, you might even get moving expenses paid for by your new employer. |

So do it while listening to a lot of David Bowie.

this is great motivation for finding a job..
if you have no savings you need a really good friend...

After a month long stint with a temp agency, he landed his career through said agency. End of story.

where do you want to move?
like someone said above you can look for a job in other areas while you work in houston...
if you are worried about procrastinating.....just pick a date and go....set aside a few grand in savings...find an apt...and find a job before it runs out...
