Summer Job

Sign in to disble this ad
Well Summer is coming and I'm officially the age to work so i started looking at some jobs. Asked by band director about job stuff and he said he thinks i could probably give beginner saxophone lessons, since I'm pretty good. Which means I need to write out lesson plans and get some kind of music writing software or whatever for printing music. I was wondering if their was any music teachers in here (private lesson teachers [or even saxophone private lessons if there are any] preferably) that might be able to give advice on good ways to set up lesson plans and what type of theory stuff would be good to teach along with the actual saxophone playing.

there is no one curriculum for every student if you can play the exercise then you can teach it, what you teach really depends on how beginner they are. you have to judge each student and then take it from there. if they have never touched an instrument before you pick up a beginner book and start there. it is always good to start them with learning to read music. as basic as the lines and spaces of the staff. as a teacher you are more of motivation and direction to them learning the instrument.

alright. I spose getting a "How to Play saxaphone" book wouldn't hurt to get an idea. I'm only going to be teaching beginner students though. And i was asking about what theory should i teach besides the basic key signature major scales and read music which is a given.

teach them modes and some basic (emphasis on basic) chord progressions like I IV V I and 12 bar blues. teach them the notes in the triads and the difference between Major and minor. honestly if you get them playing. more than 3 major scales in the 3 months of summer you did good. a good pace would be for them to play the Christmas songs by Christmas.

break the scales in to the pentatonic for easier learning too. {F G A Bb (C} D E F G) . it goes around the circle of fifths and they learn the scale up to a 9th when they stack the two. it works all the way around using the flats F with C on top, Bb with F on top...etc.

I most likely will only be teaching during the summer because of school (marching band after school won't leave much time.) I'm going to mainly try and teach people who are going to start playing saxophone next year in school or just beginners in general. But depending on how my schedule works out I may do it year round. Just take like 6-8 students for 15 or 20 dollarish 30 minute sessions each week. I never actually learned any of those triads or modes when i learned to play saxophone. Didn't learn triads or 12 bar blues stuff until i started taking bass lessons.

it is helpful for any instrument though.

actually i recommend you get a copy of this book so you can copy the beginner stuff and give to your student. it starts on this is a note explains all the stuff that you already know in a way that someone who knows nothing can understand.
