Summer Workout Help

Sign in to disble this ad
I have started working out again for two main reasons:

1. The doctor said I had to, due to having Spondo, which is a back disorder where I have an extra lumbar vertabrae. He said my abs are too weak, along with my back muscles, and getting them in shape would cut down my pain and help keep it in line.

2. I hang out with all the football/basketball cats and Im tired of them being ripped, and me being stuck watching them rake in the chicks because they have the body wanted by teenage girls.

Im just looking for help. I go to the Y 4 times a week, one day for cardio, other 3 for core/arm/leg training. Free weights and machines, depending upon how Im feeling.

I want to look good, as opposed to being a normally built cat with a strong under skin. I want to have the beginnings of a 6 pack, and guns, both of which I have never really had.

I have recently cut all fast food, and most soda/pop out of my diet. I try to avoid too much fried foods, and only eat my main 3 meals, with the occasional snack on the golf course.

Im just looking for tips, answers, and personal experience.

1.Is it true that a day in between workouts is necessary? If not, Ill go every day due to a lack of a summer job and boredom.
2. Do protein shakes/vitamins work? My buddy drinks Muscle Milk 2-3 times a day, and is freakin ripped, but he works for it too.
3. Is it true that to become "tone" you must use a smaller weight, with more reps, say 30? Or more weight for, say, 10 reps?

Thanks ahead of time guys! Anything is appreciated. And dont acknowledge the avatar.. its complicated.

Funny you should ask. I was looking up some scene from Fight Club a while back when I stumbled upon this playlist.
I'm at week 5 now, and I'm lookin a LOT better (my 6-pack is defining, and are my other muscles). Hope this helps. Also, make sure you only eat 2000 or less calories today. If you want to maintain your weight, stick to this (if you go under 2000, you'll start losing weight [worked for me... lost 20 pounds last year]).

Are you joking or is it seriously helping? What kind of results are you getting number wise.

Yeah, that's why my pants are so baggy. In school we had to write a report on a movie we liked, so I was getting some quotes from the movie via YouTube clips, and stumbled upon this.

Yes, but I'm old. 45 minutes on the elliptical and 100 pushups a day for me, 5 days a week, weekends off. But then I'm trying to stay ambulatory rather than trying to get "ripped"...

"Toned" is just having muscle mass and a low body fat.

Sets of 30 reps are pretty much pointless.

If you are going for the look, look into some beginning bodybuilding programs.

You'll generally want a rep range of 8-12 per set (though this can vary with muscle groups).

Also, the heavy lifts, like squats and deadlifts will be great for working your back and have the added benifit of helping your body add muscle mass all over.

Try and keep to something pretty simple, at least to start with. And remember, especially as a beginner, that technique (and breathing) is everything.

Yes shakes do help, take a whey shake just after your workout. 3 a day is probably excess, especially where you would be right now.

I'd also try and stick to free weights as opposed to machines, but that's me .

And you will need to give your body time to heal up.

Then why are you asking us for advice? Get yourself into one of his kettlebell classes and get ripped.
