Don't "ask" AT&T to lower their price by that much. Tell them, "I'm taking my buisness elsewhere unless you beat their price." Don't accept anything else.
My dad has been very sucessful at this over the years with Sprint. Last time we got 4 free phones that were selling for $100 after the rebates, and a cheaper plan with more minutes. We're due for more free phones soon...
NOTE: Always do these negotiations when your contract is up. They know there is a $175 cancellation fee and they won't have any problem with you leaving early if you've got time left on the contract.
