Take Greyhound from Denver to KC? Any bus riding stories?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'll be traveling from Denver to Kansas City soon and am looking at taking the Greyhound bus as I really don't want to fly.

Anybody ridden that route before and have any stories?

Is it better to ride during the day or night?

Better to ride at night because there will be less people on the bus. also you want to get there early so you can get a seat on the front of the bus. there’s a bathroom on the back that isn’t so nice to sit next to. as for my self, I have done that trip a couple of times and would rather walk then do it again. it’s cramped long and smelly, definitely not a fun ride. if you can fly it’s definitely the way to go, although if it’s an issue of saving money you might also look into renting a car. that’s what I did last time I made that trip and it ended up being right around the same price. anyway’s good luck and if you do take the bus, keep a watchful eye on your stuff and don’t fall asleep on the bus. people have been known to steel things.

Well...I am a driver but not for the hound. Keep an eye on things if you ride, and on YOUR things. Less than desirable folks do ride often. Try not to use the lavatory, they don't flush if you're on an older MCI, the newer ones might actually flush but..it'll probably still reek.
Personally I'd drive before taking the hound, I know way too much about the industry to keep me off.
I think I'll throw in another bit...

Why do drivers fall asleep?
We only get 8 hrs off between tour of duty (truckers get it better, they get 10). Maximum of 10 hrs driving in a 16hr time period. (i think it might be 17...it's weird between school bus and OTR Fed rules)
Ok take those 8 hrs...driver logs off, he has to get home(possible traffic jams, etc take time), eat, shower, do a chore or two by the time they're done, they get 4-5 hrs of sleep. I dont think so...it equals a tired driver. I don't trust intercity runs.
I've done a couple out of town trips...the potential for tunnel vision is insane..it is BORING...and it is certainly tiring. If it wasn't for my own music up front, I'd have gone crazy LOL!!!

For the record...I get plenty of sleep and have a pretty damn good record for the 15 yrs I've been driving buses. I actually know where I'm going too LOL

My sister thought riding at night was a good idea too. Until the driver fell asleep and the bus crashed and rolled over several times. The trip was Ohio to NY.

I don't want to scare you but I would seriously think twice about the night trip. She survived it and so did the rest of the passengers (Thank God) but there were some serious injuries.

No she is not rich from it either, very marginal compensation for such a horrible experience. Her medical bills were covered but that was about it.

Be careful!

Best wishes,
Craig

crawling over broken glass is preferable to the average bus ride......recently a guy went nuts on a bus and killed a kid just west of here

I took a Grayhound trip from NY to Florida when I was about 18. NEVER again. It seemed like it took a week. I never saw so many freaky people either. I'd rather hitchhike

Don't do it. Years ago, I took a bus ride from home back to college after spring break. There were creepy people all around me, including one guy who offered to buy my Walkman and cassette collection (ok, many years ago!) three or four different times before I asked him to leave me alone. Plus, the bus stopped in every one-horse town between Connecticut and Ohio, turning a nine-hour trip into 15.

My drummer's son just rode up here (Sioux Falls SD) from Alexandria LA. Not sure which line he rode used but he didn't have any troubles at all. Said it was about a 33-hour trip up here but for $150 roundtrip ticket he was OK with that. Plus he said he got some food vouchers with the ticket so it cut back on his eating costs a lot.

Of course my drummer's son is 24, goes about 6'2 and 210 lbs and is in the Air Guard so I don't think he had to worry too much about people messin with him. Your mileage may totally vary.

You won't have much choice. If you are riding the Greyhound, you will be riding day and night. What's usually a 8-9 hour trip will be about 16-20.

I've taken the Greyhound from DC to Chicago, and it took about 22 hours. By car it's about 11.
Sleeping is near impossible between the constant stops, bumps, smells, and people. The food at a bus station is just a tad better than 3rd world cuisine. The riders make Walmart look like a gala ball. The Greyhound is purgatory on wheels.

I took that ride when I was 19 or so. Layovers in Fayetteville NC and Savannah GA were the (not very) high points of a terrible trip. There was a guy with fleas on the bus.

Once rode from Los Angeles to San Fran by Greyhound. A 7 hour trip became 11 hours. I did happen to find a bag of weed on the bus though.
