Tamron 17-55mm 2.8 - is it like the 28-70mm 2.8?

I do concert photography but ditched my Tamron 28-70mm 2.8 because it was really soft wide open and couldn't focus well in low lighting situations. Lots of 17-55mm 2.8 Tamrons floating around used and the reviews on Fred Miranda indicate this is a good lens. Concert photography pushes your lenses to the extreme and was wondering if there are any other photographers who have tried using this lens in a concert setting (ie. clubs). The only lens I use right now is a Nikon 50mm 1.8 - cheap, faster, sharp with great contrast - but the fixed focal length is limiting.
