so i ordered a rider-waite tarot deck from amazon which should be here in a day or two. i've been interested in learning for a while, probably because i like logical systems (number puzzles, geometries and the like) and tarot seems very multi-faceted in the way you can approach it.

so i've started reading up on different spreads and the meanings of the individual cards, and am feeling a bit overwhelmed. so i was wondering (on the extremely off-chance) if anyone on TB is into tarot, and if they have any advice for me

I've bought two tarot decks in the past six months and keep forgetting about them. I got the Druidcraft and the Thoth decks. I've always been interested in learning more about it, which is what made me buy them in the first place. Do you have a book that went with your deck? What I thought I would do is spend some time with each arcana and learn them really well, then move on to the next. Maybe start off with the Major Arcana first?

Most symbol-based divinatory systems are designed to be intuition-based, rather than purely logical. Read up on the cards. Get a sense of the patterns in them (e.g., what are pentacles? what are swords? how do the 3's of each suit compare? what feeling do you get from the card? etc.) rather than fretting over the meaning of each card.
Then jump in and do some readings. You'll probably start pretty much by rote, referring to the "meanings" of each card from whatever source you choose. As you get more familiar, you'll get more free in your interpretation.
Tarot cards are much like Rorschach images - it's less about "what the image means" and more about what it evokes in you.

Personally I prefer the look of the Vertigo deck. Other than that... I got nothing.

From reading a few of those, it looks a bit complicated. I would bet there are easier to understand sources out there.

I don't know man. I don't know much about tarot myself, but I'd suggest reading about the history of tarot and the histories of some of the big names associated with the word tarot and their take on things. Then you can go in whatever direction(s) you want to go from there.

Ive got a few Tarot decks. I havent studied them as well as Id like to but I still can. It seems most of my life Ive been around them for some reason. Weird. I think my mother had a set and I remember looking at them as a child. I saw what I now know was the 1JJ Swiss deck at a friends house once. I had a friend send me a standard Rider Waite deck as a gift back in 01... just seems I was meant to get into them at some point.

They are good for intuition and focusing and though they cant really tell the future persay, the 'answers' they give to questions can lead to some clarity and meditation on an issue.

I have several decks now: the Thoth which is a wicked wicked deck and it has a whole nother set of rules and guidelines so to speak then other decks. I have the best Halloween deck out there and being a Halloween NUT I connect with that deck perfectly. I have the original Londa Deck, I have one of the Goth decks out today, the Revelations deck, Dark Matters deck, a Radiant Rider Waite, plus the one my friend sent me. Seems Im missing a deck in this list and Im too lazy right now to look heheh

There are thousands of decks out there and there is no right or wrong deck. The trick is to find a deck(s) that has the images that you can connect with the best and it doesnt have to be just one deck. Ive read where some people have hundreds of decks... no way for me LOL but I do have about 8-9 decks.

Here is a good site to check out:

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/

It has examples of a LOT of decks and a forum and can really help you learn and understand the cards.
