Tattoos.. yay or nay.

I am a fan, if they mean something. Family heritage, a moment you will never forget, memorials, a bass clef, etc. But my parents disagree. They say, and dont flame me for this, that tattoos hurt your personaly identity and give a bad example.

I know some of you guys have full body tats, but Im wondering what you opinion is. I would like to get a bass clef when I graduate high school, but its hard with no support and the feeling of being unwanted by family.

My grandpa and his siblings all think they are terrible and if I came home with one they will sand it off with sand paper. My grandpa is my best friend, and I wouldnt live without him. I know he will pass away some day, thats not the point.

Just a random inquiry.

Thats smart, but Im not like that. I cant keep things from family. It is family, you know.

I think if I sat down and talked to my gramp and parents, they would understand. Its my life, and a small tattoo isnt going to hurt who I am or what I can be.

Im only a Sophomore in high school, but I plan ahead.

My personal few, not for others but reason i don't have one, My philosophy is that I always want an option to change my mind in any decision. Tattoos have to mean something. So don't want someone on me that I might later disagree with.

Do you belong to yourself, or to your family? That's not a "one right answer" question--you really need to decide whether you belong to them or only to yourself. If you belong to them, then they have a say in whether you get tattooed. If you belong only to yourself, then they have no say.

I didn't keep things from my family when I was in high school either, at least, nothing like this.

But as you're a sophomore in high school, you've got a couple of years before you can get a tattoo anyway, so if you've still got the urge and a very clear idea of what you want and where by the time you turn 18, then you're all set. Just don't get something you'll regret later.

But, yeah, I would seat down with them and explain what tattoos mean to you, what you want to do, explain your point of view on tattoos and maybe they will understand and approve.

I'm with the "If you still want the same tattoo in a couple years, then get it" crowd. When I was younger I regularly got the itch to get a tat. Looking back, I'm glad I never did; not a single one of those designs would I want on my body today. Plus, the older I get, the more I find I just dislike tats. To be honest, the first thing that pops into my head when I see a tat at a glance is "Oh god that person has a nasty skin disease". Of course, once I get a good look at it, I realize what it is. Still, not for me. Anyways, you're young, wait on it, I say. Who cares how many kids in your class have tats? Getting one shouldn't be a competition.

I'd say ditch the regular bass clef. EVERYONE gets one of those. Even people that dont play an instrument, I've seen it. If you want something Bass-clef-ish, hit the drawing board, make it yours. There's nothing better than putting your OWN stuff on your OWN body.

I know a guy that went to a tatt parlour and basically picked something out of an asian comic book It was THE most typical thing a person could get, and i had to do a facepalm.

I say if you have to go on the internet and type on a keyboard to get the opinion of people you never met on tattoos, you got your answer.

Get an opinion of your own, not other people's opinion of yourself.

I was sitting at the bar of a HOOTERS restaurant, ordering my usual 20 piece three mile island chicken wings to go, and the chic behind the bar was so amazing that I had to think of something clever to say just to talk with her. I wanted a ton when I was sixteen. At eighteen I opted to hold off a few years. At twenty-two, I could take it or leave it, and two more years down the road, I'm pretty sure that shying away from the ink is best for my professional future.
