She was really funny in the skits, she brought life to the usual lame skits, better than most actors do when they host. The shot at Kanye in her monolauge was cool. |

I've had the joy of working at Kohl's for the last few months and they have about 3-4 Taylor Swift songs in their 4-hour rotation, so I've had plenty of time to really listen to those lyrics. I cannot believe whatever producer got lined up with her didn't take the liberty of changing a lot of the words in those songs. A lot of the word choice is clunky to the point of sucking any sexy or sad out of the songs (for popular music, I'm also not comparing to the lyric-heavy stuff I tend to listen to) and the overall lyrical flow of every song is just bleh. Her unique voice is take it or leave it, based on personal preference, but I don't see how anyone can think her lyricism is developed to the point that she should be a mainstream songwriter, It sounds like the stuff the worst beginners in a workshop bring in before they learn any better--again, just the lyrics, not the music or the way they come together, she's no beginner there.
As little as I get into top 40 stuff, I'm not one to slam just because something it's popular, and I can appreciate what's good about music that doesn't happen to be my favorite. I honestly think the only reason Taylor Swift is popular is because of her good marketing based on her looks. The music isn't terrible (just terribly cheesy), but there's nothing above average in it IMO.
If she's good at acting, maybe she'll move to a successful career in that. I did quit Kohl's the other day, so my Taylor Swift ordeal is over either way.

We all wish we could have the career and the pop-country songwriting chops that she has. She has handled herself well, and as an "old guy" here on the other side of worrying about what's cool (in other words, I could give a rats a$$ about what others think of what I listen to and like), she has my respect.
She's a great role model. My 11 year old daughter is absolutely nuts about her stuff. Taylor got her off the Myley/Montana bandwagon (thank God!) For that alone, I am indebted to her!

She's got charm, good looks, and is a very poised, mature entertainer for her age, but I think she is horrible for the country music genre. Her new single is about the "trials and tribulations" of being 15 years old. In country music? Give me a break. What the hell has the typical 15-year-old experienced to be truly sad about? They don't know the meaning of the word, take it from an experienced adult. Wait a few years until the hammer really falls hard on your grown-up _ss, then write me a country song. Otherwise, save it for the Disney Channel.

Nothing!
But 15 year olds are generally over dramatic, so they relate to her songs. Which I think is why she's made it.
Kids can relate to her songs. |

There are plenty of grown-ups who love her music, but that's just butter after the target is hit. As she grows, her music (and lyrics) will mature. And her audience will expand. I think she will be one of the biggest cross-over artists of our time. All of this has nothing to do with what I think of her music personally. I just think she's here to stay.
To the OP. She's a hoot. My wife has watched it on the DVR twice already and hasn't erased it yet.

It reminds me of the "Islands In The Stream" days of country crossover. Dolly and Kenny and Tom T. Hall.
For many of us country traditionalists and purists, not the best of times.
We'll just have to gut it out until the next retro-revolution.

Call the lyrics sappy if you like, but that little girl was writing honest to god hit songs, with a depth of soul, and personal experience, that most of you poo-pooers couldn't achieve in 3 lifetimes, even if you had the nards to say things that personal in public.
Hate away, she will be the Dolly Parton of her generation (minus the boobage, of course).

Kids can relate to her songs. | That's exactly why she's made it. Pre-teens and teens can listen to a song and relate it to their life. Like her or not (I don't particularly like her) she's hit the formula for her - meaningful songs for young girls, cute for the young and not so young boys and a great PR person and stylist.
Timeless, deep, meaningful songs are not required for success these days. |
