TB Kayakers?

Sign in to disble this ad
Any kayakers here at TB? I've been eager to get into paddling lately, and after some research I'm thinking a Perception Carolina 14.0 is the best fit for what I want to do. I got really excited when I found a Necky Looksha 14 w/ rudder on local Craigslist for a steal, but when I went to check it out, I BARELY fit in the cockpit. That thing is tiny! I also like the options on the Wilderness Systems Pungo 14, but the front of the cockpit was just a bit claustrophobic to me. I've also found a good price on an Old Town Dirigo 12xt, but I'm just not sure that I wouldn't want to upgrade before long if I bought that one. The cockpit is nice and large, and the boat has some good dry storage options, but I'm not sure that I wouldn't find myself longing for the comfort and extra length of the Perception Carolina.

So my question for TBers: What is your boat and what are your main uses for it? Any tips for an eager novice?

I have an Impex Assateague. Mostly on large local lakes, but every fall we take a trip to Bar Harbor to paddle.
TIPS - check out http://www.paddling.net/. Lots of great info and knowledgeable folks. There are also boats for sale.

I've been looking to get into it. For years I've looked forward to summers spent paddling around in some inflatable kayaks my family has laying around, but this is the year I'm going to bite the bullet and get something nice(ish) for myself. I'm looking at some of the mid-range Hobie offerings right now.

My wife and I got a couple Old Town Vapor 10XT's. We mostly go out on lakes and slow rivers/streams. The cockpit is large enough for us with our kids between our legs (sitting on flotation devices). I am looking to upgrade to a 12XT - My son is big enough to paddle himself now.

Wilderness Systems Rascal here. Had it for about 12 years now. A 9 feet, I used to keep it in my Isuzu Amigo so I could paddle around on the Hudson before or after work. It's neat for loading up with gear and camping. Kind of like a cold water sit a top. Can't roll it, it's too wide, but it's stable when dealing with the water around West Point. Some wid currents and big barges moving through a tight spot. I have two and will most likely be getting my kids in them this year.

Haven't been kayaking for a couple of years now, I used to live river running though.
