Teacher to Muslim Student: Are You Sad Your Uncle Died? | The Root

Assuming this story is true, this teacher should never be in a classroom again.

Wow, talk about ignorance.

Sadly, it just kind of sounds 'typical 'merican"

Well, providing it's true, I don't think he'll have many supporters.
It's very easy for kids to make shocking false claims these days and have them be believed so easily, yet...sadly there are no shortage of idiots who would actually say such a thing.
So... once again I'll have to reserve judgment at this point until more info comes out.

And that statement is somehow more 'enlightened" then what the teacher is alleged to have said?

This is how I'm approaching it. Does it highlight that some people will say insensitive things or continue to be ignorant because they've bought into fear mongering? Yes. But unless the teacher admits and apologizes,...or a classroom full of kids corroborates the claim,...this is is pretty much a matter of "he said; she said".

One thing that caught my attention is that Islamic Society of Greater Houston President Aziz Siddiqui says: "A lot of people are ignorant in the world, and so you just have to ignore them."

I'm not sure that ignoring "them" would help really. You can't just ignore a problem and hope it goes away on its own.

I don't know if the young lady in the picture is the student or not.

The fact that another student mentioned it to her mother who then brought it to the attention of the school, gives the story more credibility. The student who was verbally abused did not make the report herself.

Disagree. I think the typical american understands the difference between radicals and rank-and-file religious people of whatever color. But I think Fox/CNN/MSNBC have seriously distorted the public view of the public.

yeah, I'm sure you meant that there are some great folks in Texas, but there may be some residents of that state who may think like this teacher is alleged to.

I stand corrected.

I was being a bit facetious, its not quite 'typical American' (thats why I left off the A).

Maybe more 'typical middle 'merican'

joking, of course

Problem is, there have always been ignorant people, and there always will be ignorant people. In that sense I agree with him. Ignorance will never ever go away, and it's up to us to decide how much attention we give to it.

If their education system is anything like California's he'll be impossible to fire regardless of what he actually did.
