Wife is looking for chemistry and/or physics teaching job and don't know where to find the listings.
Already looked online as much as I know of.
Anyone know of positions opening near you? She has a great resume (4.0 k12-college, 34 ACT, masters, etc.) and we both play instruments in a band as a bonus!
Is there a super-secret way to find openings that we don't know of? Looking in all over the SW US area from TX to CA but no luck yet. |

That is generally how it goes here.

I know from experience (2 parents were teachers) that there ARE a lot of openings that just don't get listed but are only "advertised" within the community/school.
Schools are still way behind in terms of technology, so not much gets posted online. But, we're 1,000 miles away from these towns. |

They fill any openings from the pool as positions become available. I don't know how other States do it. Have her check out Community Colleges. It's actually easier to get teaching jobs with them.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Aug 2002 Location: Waco, TX | | | In Texas you just apply to each district. I was very fortunate when I got hired at my current school. A lot of people want to work in this district and I got hired two weeks after school started due to them having more 4th graders than they'd expected. Ive been here ever since. is your female experienced?
Here's the thing in Texas right now, man: a lot of schools are hurting. States are cutting budgets. Dallas ISD cut thousands of jobs, Austin ISD laid off over 700. My district canceled our annual job fair. The districts are all freaked out about some big budget cuts that are coming down the pipe. So not only are there not as many jobs to be had as there were in the past but there are a lot of teachers with experience looking for jobs. Even worse news for your wife is that the things you mentioned in the parenthesis in your post are not what makes a good resume in the eyes of most principals. Those things (good grades, masters degree) will be trumped by classroom experience (and the good references that come with that) every single time. Not trying to be a downer but that's the reality of the situation in Texas right now. I'm not saying that your wife can't get a job in Texas but she may have to settle for a very undesirable location/school/environment for a while. She may get lucky and get on somewhere but her best chance is probably to submit an application to, say, Houston ISD and then start calling individual schools in the district and talking to principals. You can usually apply or find applications through school district websites. Best of luck.

Of course we can't say what things will be like for K-12 education going forward, but math & science teachers will probably always be in demand.
Note that many jobs don't get posted until the annual hiring cycle begins. I don't know when that is. |

She had done the 1 yr student teaching and 3 years at a high school full time regular teacher. So SOME experience but not a lot. Loves teaching though. |

She should create a profile there even if there's nothing of interest - it can make the bureaucratic process a bit simpler and it may catch someone's eye.
Apart from that, usual stuff about getting her resume in front of as many people as possible applies. My wife got her current job when a principal at a school she had applied to passed her resume on to one at a school she hadn't applied to - a very lucky break. Wikipedia has a list of all high schools in California which may be a good starting point for planning a mini mail campaign.

bc | +1 on EdJoin. Most CA districts only use edjoin to organize applicants these days. There might not be a lot on there currently. Lots of schools are still building/confirming their enrollment for next year and it's still too early to know about retirements, etc. |

I just heard a district near mine will be laying off teachers with less than 12 years. Things are ugly right now. Good luck though. We need more science minded folks. |

Many of my friends are also international teachers in places like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China. Asian kids are a treat to work with, the pay can be great, the perks are great, and the travel you will never forget. I'm addicted!

But, we're far too stereotypical "American" and would totally die without all the things we have here. Plus we want to be able to see family quite often.
Good suggestion though, I've heard good things about teaching there. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
