Television Buying Help

Anyone know anything about buying TV's?

I divorcing my smelly pirate hooker wife and need a new TV. I'm in the 4-600 range.

I want 1080P as I use Netflix and play Xbox often but don't really care about much else, unless I should??

I was gonna buy this...

Magnavox 46" 1080p LCD HDTV - Walmart.com

That's not much of a budget for a 'nice' TV, so just grab whatever has the features you want. You'll be replacing it in a couple of years anyway. I'd look at Vizio though.

With a 600 price ceiling, the reality is that you will want to stay away from bigger name brands. Vizio gives you bang for your buck. Avoid Westinghouse.

Also, I hope you punched her right in the baby maker.

Be careful with Visio. The one we recently purchased, our 2nd, has weird problems and randomly turns off when you change channels and the sound cuts out. But when you change the channel it goes back to normal. Our other one works fine, just personal experience. We've done EVERYTHING to try and fix it.

re vizio fail rates... for what its worth a row of pixels went glitchy about 6 months after i bought my samsung (big... fancy...), but they replaced it for free (came out to my house and everything for nothing). in retrospect, i would by the tv with the best warranty and company reputation you can. a 400 dollar tv costs 800 when you have to buy another, since pretty much all repairs are prohibitively expensive in that price range.

Yeah, the other one has a row of glitchy pixels at the top :/
My dad didn't buy a warrantee so we're pretty screwed on that. lol
I've seen plenty of great working ones though, and other than the sound the one is 100% top notch.

Flat screen prices are coming down, so there are many options available. Perhaps THE biggest screen is not a priority, but for $600 you can get a nice 42" if you find the right sale.
VISIO is definitely worth a look in my opinion. I currently own two of them, my brothers owns a third and my in-laws own a fourth. No issues across the board.

Shop TigerDirect.Com sales.

Get on their daily ad spam email and you'll see some amazing deals sooner or later. Beat local sales tax, which in my case is nearly 10%.

I haven't watched TV in almost three years, but if I did, this is what I'd do to get a new TV.

Good luck on dumping the pig.

My dad just picked up a 42" LG for $500 on sale at Sears. Watch those places for sales and you should be able to pick up a better name in that price range.

little trick with amazon: go to the list of items youve bought (and maybe rated). this is what your daily deals are based off of (the 5-6 that are on your home page thing). remove them all. find the tv you want. find associated warranty. go to "rate this item" and give it a 5 star rating. you dont need to verify that you own it. you will then receive bluray and tv stand and eventually tv deals. thats how i got mine. its showed up in a week and a half. ive known it to work for many others. ymmv.

Gee, there's a highly ethical way to game the system and screw up the value of ratings for everyone who actually uses them

Picked up two Panasonic viera's. Both are 1080. One is 52" one is 37". I also picked up a networkable Panasonic blu-ray/DVD/cd/mp3/iPod stereo system than has surround sound and access to Netflix and YouTube. Spent 1400 bucks total (including wall mounts and hdmi cables). Of course, I hustled on the day after thanksgiving. I've seen deals that have been close since. I bought everything at Sears.

My friend who worked selling TV's told me to go refurbished. He said the failure rate or a refurb is actually significantly LOWER than new TV's...And He advises on the warranty as well with the savings of going refurb.
