Thanksgiving was started as a celebration by early colonists (Pilgrims) of North America for having survived a year in the "New World". They invited their good friends, the Indians, and had a feast of turkey, deer, veggies, and various other things they killed, grew, or scavenged. After stuffing themselves, they settled in the living room to watch a football game and started making plans to get their Christmas shopping started the next day.
That's it, briefly. I'll let others go into more detail.

For me, it's a time to focus on the things in life for which I'm grateful - as harvest festivals are wont to be. We've brought in the bounty, much to celebrate, let's eat!
Big feasting day, typically turkey, root vegetables and fall vegetables.
Pumpkin pie and chocolate bourbon pecan pie are big at my house.

Thanks to you guys who replied, coz now i don't need to wonder what the hell is going on when it comes to Thanksgiving again next time round. That's a part of the tradition and culture.

I wonder, how many national holidays do you people have?
Are you as lazy as us I wonder. We had a 9 days of holiday last week.
It was a religious thing though.I'm not a believer but I like Islam on some aspects.
Also we have a few other holidays like our wictory on Independence War,decleration of republic etc. Those are usually one day holidays where celebrations take place.

Puritan New England states would proclaim days of thanksgiving on an ad hoc basis, and after the Revolution congress would do the same. The regular, annual Thanksgiving holiday in November was only begun by Lincoln in 1863.

No, but really in it's most basic form, it's just a day set aside to be thankful for what you have, family friends etc. At least that's how we celebrate it.

Not too long ago some people with strange clothes and odd ways arrived on our shore. They were in no hurry to leave and yet weren't very adapt at feeding themselves. Since it was the time of the ending of the harvest season when all Native Peoples had ceremonies (Thanksgiving) giving thanks to the Creator. It was thought that it would be the right thing to do and feed these malnourished strangers before they perished. So we shared and showed them what to eat and what to harvest.
There are those that now question the wisdom of that act of kindness...but that and the rest are now history.
And to the OP about the turkey thing. Wild turkeys were once plentiful throughout most of North America. They provided more meat than most foul, good tasting, and not difficult to catch.

i post this to offer some other historical perspectives: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richar..._b_788436.html
this one is more blunt and sensational: http://www.manataka.org/page269.html
