Based on some of the posts I've been reading lately, it almost seems like some people think they'll develop "street cred" if they're the first person to jump on someone who has posted a redundant thread.
Posting about the OP like he isn't there, using the rolleyes smiley, and making rude comments about how dumb someone is does not make you look cool to the other members on the board, as if you're a vet or "in the know". It makes you look like an ass.
Please stop. If someone starts another SX thread in the Basses forum, simply don't click on it. It's really not that hard. We're all aware that there are a lot of threads on that subject. Simply move on to the next thread.
If the temptation is simply too great and you absolutely cannot leave the thread alone, I would suggest that you simply perform the search yourself and post a link to the results for the the original poster, politely letting him know that there is plenty of reading material regarding his subject via the search feature.
Finally, if you're too lazy to do that, at least be polite to someone and let them know about the search function. You don't have to be a jerk. You're not impressing anyone.
I'm all about informing people about the search function. It's very helpful. But doing it in the wrong manner can give a new member a negative view of our wonderful forum. First and early impressions are quite powerful, and it would be a shame to lose new members just because someone's e-persona is feeling ballsy.
Don't be an ass. Think of the children. |

There are plenty of posts attacking the people that attack people that can't find the search button. |

A 6 month old thread isn't going to help with anything unless it's about a 20 year old bass, and then if it's about value it worthless again. |

I see plenty of instances where someone is rudely told to "do a search, this has already been discussed." Well, what if the OP hasn't found the info they need? What if they want some fresh discussion? What if they want the opinions of newer members that were not on the forum when the original discussion went down?
If it's really that important for you to tell someone "do a search, you're wasting our time", it seems to me that you're wasting MORE time by posting rudely, instead of not posting at all, and just moving on to something that interests you more.
And if you don't believe that I've been on this particular soapbox before.....do a search! |

Also, when someone searches, finds the thread they are after, posts in it to get more info, you know the next person to post is gonna say "Zombie Thread"

I've done it several times, and everyone has been very thankful about it.
So it's like "hold on, I'll do a search for ya noob." |

| | | | I have yet to do a search, and have it return relevant information. I don't know if any of you, like me, nostalgically remember the old search feature that actually worked well; functioned easily, and returned meaningful, relevant, concise results...I miss that.
Telling someone to do a search now is almost tantamount to telling someone "go read the forum first"...because the search feature isn't really likely to be of much help.
Hasn't been to me. |

You never know when some new information about a subject could come about from someone asking a question again. |
