I'm planning on taking a short trip to Austin sometime before the year end to catch some local bands, and to generally kick back in a part of the world I've not yet vistited. Aside from catching some local Austin bands, I'm not particular about where I go and what I do after that - I'm open to going travelling (I'm considering a quick jaunt out of state into New Orleans). I want to make sure the weather is not insane (read: blisteringly hot, murderous hurricanes, etc.) as I find Ontario summers bad enough.
So, when is your weather a bit more reasonable? And what's there to do? FYI - my idea of heaven is cold beer and live music.
Edit: I should probably mention, I'm a musician and a student, so I don't have an extensive budget!

| | | | 6th street and Salt Grass, that's all you need to know.
Oh and the bums are great there.
I went over the summer for a week in july '04 not bad, not nearly as humid as up in the north.
you also have to go to the reptile place... just because, they have monkeys!!

But if you're inside listening to music, doesn't matter - y'all come.

Oh yeah, besides 6th Street, don't forget to check out Austin's resident bat population. Also, if you're up for traveling and can find folks to go, tube the Comal river. Not sure on the season, been years since I dun it. And for the nature-minded, you can go get your commune on at Hippy Hollow.
Peace,
Greg

Seriously... It's !@#$ing hot right now.

We usually don't start getting the real cold weather till mid to late December. Also, Texas is HUGE! I live in the middle of Texas and if I drive to California the texas border is pretty much half way. 6th street in Austin is pretty cool. There are so many bars there, you can easily see 20 bands in an evening.

It's worth checking out, since it's free to watch them from the bridge or the field. It's an Austin thing.
Peace,
