Texans: When is a good time to visit, and what should I check out?

I'm planning on taking a short trip to Austin sometime before the year end to catch some local bands, and to generally kick back in a part of the world I've not yet vistited. Aside from catching some local Austin bands, I'm not particular about where I go and what I do after that - I'm open to going travelling (I'm considering a quick jaunt out of state into New Orleans). I want to make sure the weather is not insane (read: blisteringly hot, murderous hurricanes, etc.) as I find Ontario summers bad enough.

So, when is your weather a bit more reasonable? And what's there to do? FYI - my idea of heaven is cold beer and live music.

Edit: I should probably mention, I'm a musician and a student, so I don't have an extensive budget!

6th street and Salt Grass, that's all you need to know.
Oh and the bums are great there.

I went over the summer for a week in july '04 not bad, not nearly as humid as up in the north.

you also have to go to the reptile place... just because, they have monkeys!!

New Orleans will still be unbearable to most in September. Hurricane season doesn't end until November 30th, but I'd think October/Novemeber would be a decent enough time.

Visit New Orleans or TX any time between October and May. Not June through September...too hot.

But if you're inside listening to music, doesn't matter - y'all come.

Austin is awesome in the winter. Come check out ACL Festival in September. Also, Red River district downtown is awesome.

Bingo, a Texas summer is one few forget. Better to try during the winter months. October is a fairly good time to visit. I always liked my state's weather during my birth month.

Oh yeah, besides 6th Street, don't forget to check out Austin's resident bat population. Also, if you're up for traveling and can find folks to go, tube the Comal river. Not sure on the season, been years since I dun it. And for the nature-minded, you can go get your commune on at Hippy Hollow.

Peace,
Greg

Try heading out to Austin while ACL is going on, you'll get more music than you'll know what to do with. And it won't feel roughly like stepping into an oven every time you go outside.

Seriously... It's !@#$ing hot right now.

Judging from all these responses... I guess it's hot in Texas right now?

Really ****ing hot. As in, "start sweating on the way to the car, even though you're in tshirts and shorts" hot.

Ha! Thats an understatement. Seriously, I would think about coming in November. We usually don't start getting the real cold weather till mid to late December. Also, Texas is HUGE! I live in the middle of Texas and if I drive to California the texas border is pretty much half way. 6th street in Austin is pretty cool. There are so many bars there, you can easily see 20 bands in an evening.

Things must've cooled off in the Cypress area, I saw one dude's skin melt into his clothes earlier today down in the medical center...

Austin's a great town, I've been twice for SXSW. The ACL festival lineup always looks good to me. Granted, it'll still be hot.

Yes, Austin has a large population of bats that reside under the Congress St. bridge. It's pretty cool to hang out come evening and watch them leave out for their night's hunting. They are insect predators, not really dangerous to humans, and they do some nice damage to the local insect population every night that saves the environment and local taxpayers from insecticide spraying.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_bat_bridge

It's worth checking out, since it's free to watch them from the bridge or the field. It's an Austin thing.

Peace,
Greg
