Theatrical Re-Releases

As a kid I saw films in the theaters that were originally released before I was born. These weren't classics at the time, but they were popular films that were a couple years old.

How common were theatrical re-releases prior to the domination of home video? I know Disney did it through the late 80's but were other companies doing national campaigns? How long would it be between releases? Was it only very popular films or was this a practice for a lot of their catalog?

Home entertainment has largely eliminated this and I would love to hear more about it from some TBers familiar with that era.
