Admittedly, I get irritated with things like this. Some of the ones I see a lot on TB:

Loose vs. Lose
Advice vs. Advise
To/Too/Two

I used to review/approve a lot of reports. One time, just to make a point regarding the importance of proper spelling, I sent this Far Side cartoon to some of the people I supervised:

I appreciate threads like this one, because the grammar nazis call themselves out for scrutinization.

Lots of words like that.

Accept/Except
Stationery/Stationary
Effect/Affect
Compliment/Complement
Metal/Mettle

come to mind.

Used to need a big bulky dictionary to get things right.
Nowadays with the Internet it's easier than ever.
People think if it passes the spellchecker it must be right.
nerp.

Also makes me blink when people use "whenever" instead of "when".

But I can understand your point. The fact that all different kinds of people, with different educational levels meet on this forum to discuss their interest for all things bass makes for some really interesting clashes in how to use the written word
^^^This. Some people are using translators etc... Just stop calling Bimmers Beamers. It's Bimmer dang it.

Something that I can't stand to hear is when somebody says "whole nother". There is no such word as "nother". The term is "whole other". I hear this often with TV announcers and newscasters as well.

Well, that was Noah Webster's goal with standardization of American English - to make it easier. Of course, that was 180 years ago.

I know. Life is too short to get bugged by things like this. I get it.
What gets me is the use of there in place of their.

I'm getting sick of work emails that look a bit like this...."Wud u min sndn me the rprt?" or "wht tim will u b done?" Really? Skipping all those letters made your day that much more productive?

These aren't people on blackberrys or iphones...office full keyboard folks that send emails like teenage texts.

I usually write back: "uyqwtoyweywqtwqioywqeiew...got it?"

Exactly.

The culture shift of the early 90's started making it completely acceptable to use poor grammar, curse excessively, and become completely devoid of manners. Today, it is ridiculous just how stupid many people have become.

Laziness is the main affliction in our schools, teachers, and society.
