Is there a proper way to trim a beard?

So I've grown out my first fairly legit beard over the past month and a half, and it has begun to get pretty... well... nasty looking lol. I was wondering if there are any good tips or tricks out there to help tidy it up a little bit. I haven't touched it at all yet, and I still plan on growing it out more, so no worries

Comb it in the direction you want it to lay for starters. Trim any wild hairs that stick out first of all. Check in a mirror to make sure the shape is even across the whole face, and using small scissors, trim those hairs till it is straight. If your going for a certain length, a good thing to remember is that it will need to be a bit shorter as you get to your sideburns and hair so that it looks even. Does your beard grow straight or is it curly? Or a mix? On my cheeks mine comes in curly, but on the neck and chin line its straight. The curls you just have to keep the right amount of fluffyness to them so as not to make it look thin and teenaged. The straight ones just need to be trimmed to length to look their best. If you shave any off the bottom of the beard make sure to keep that line nice and even across your face; symmetry is the key.

Hope that helps.

Go slow. Trim a little at a time. Clippers are good as long as you have a steady hand.

Or go to a barber.

I use a beard trimmer. I comb it all out straight and moderately crispy with a comb & hairdryer, shag it out, re-comb it out, then start trimmin. Either attachments for length, or if I'm goin for specific facial topiary, freehand...no french curves.

I'm hopeless with scissors in a mirror. Wahl Lithium Ion clippers. About $30 and work great. Use mine about three times a week and only takes a minute.

I would always run the trimmer in the up direction on my cheeks and down around my chin. It keeps the sides shorter and the chin area a bit longer that way. I don't remember what the length of the guard was though. I have it someplace, but haven't had a beard in years.

With an Axe.
Chainsaws are also acceptable under certain circumstances.

I use 1/4" guard on buzzer and then clean up the edges with some scissors and a comb. Same for head, I look like one of those old GI Joe toys after I'm done.

Beard trimmers are so easy to use, it would take an idiot to really mess it up.

I trim my goatee pretty close. Just take my beard scissors and snip away.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th set of beard trimmers and they keep getting better, easy to use. Joe Gress pretty much outlined my procedure.
