for the most part i let the band director at my college pimp me out to whomever wants to pay. and well so far he has me gigs lined up for the rest of the semester. im starting to wonder where im gonna find time to do my homework. and am seriously considering not getting a part time job.

is there such a thing as too many gigs?

If the gigs pay well enough, you might not need the part time job. OTOH if it interferes with homework, or you are doing it all for free (including rehearsals), then it is too much.

most of the gigs will be paid. some of the gigs will mean skipping non-paying gigs. rehearsals are free. it still averages out to about $15 an hour. but if i cannot do my homework i will fail classes ill have to sacrifice sleep and talkbass to do schoolwork.

I have found that a few decent paying casuals a week can pay as much as a part time job with half the hours.

I've played 60 one nighters in a row (80s/90/s) and always wanted "just one more"

im playing some pretty formal stuff here, the gigs are for a brass quintet and the occasional fill in for the local symphony on trombone. it will all be suit and tie type stuff.

You should never let a gig cut into your TB time.

Suit & tie would require more than $15 per hour.

well it will be $50 for the suit and tie part, and $0 for the jeans and t-shirt part of the gig. it is an average type deal here.

No, no such thing.
Take the gigs, unless they are absolutely horrible, which I doubt they are.

Enjoy and have fun! Try and learn something at every gig, too, while you're at it :P

If gigs are cutting in to your earning time, then they need to be paying more than your part time job - and they should be, so loose the job. If you're getting $50 an hour for the gig, but averaging $15 over all you either need to charge more, charge for rehersals ($20?), or do less rehersals. If you're gigging that much, and they're solid bands you should be able to get by with a quick run through a few days before, or even just drop in on the night.

If gigs are cutting into school time, then they need to go. How much are you paying for school? Bet the gigs don't pay THAT much.
