I think Russia has either abolished the death penalty or there is a long-standing moratorium on it. I heard something once, but I don't feel like looking it up at the moment.

Agreeing that 19 years in a maximum security Russian prison is probably much worse than the death penalty in the USA.

I thought they gt rid of it under Yeltson (not sure on the spelling there) when there was talks of them joining the EU.

As for the crime, I would think that you could find something easier to kill and eat if you were hungry.

Russian prisons were pretty much 3rd world standard a few years ago.. I'm sure stuff hasn't changed much, recently.
