Things to do in Boston?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all. The girl and I are going to be in Boston from May 31st to June 6th. We don't have much planned, if anything at all. I believe she booked a whale-watching tour for that first Sunday we're there (June 1st), at the suggestion of our friends who went to Boston a couple years back. We're most likely going to check out some museums, and I believe we're going to stay at a Bed & Breakfast in Province Town for a portion of the trip. Other than that, we're still looking for things to do.

Anyone got any ideas? We'll be without a car this trip, and when we're not at the B&B, we'll be staying at the Radisson near Boston Commons, so all of our sight-seeing/escapades will be on foot.

Any Boston natives/residents want to help a fellow TBer out?

Thanks in advance!

Go to Cambridge. I love Harvard and the area around it. If you are a book person, it is egghead heaven!

Be patriotic. Throw tea bags in Boston Harbor. Some friends of mine did this when they went up there for chowder.

I'd LOVE to go to Fenway, but it'll take some major convincing to get the girl to agree.

Good luck getting tickets. Unless you can pay scalper prices.

The Boston Museum of Fine Art is a must on your list. They have
many exquisite paintings by well known artists. It is a
world class museum. About a quarter of a mile away is the
Isabella Gardner Museum, which has some very famous pieces as well.
You can reach there by taking the Green Line west on Huntington Avenue.
(There is a fancy restaraunt on the first floor and a very reasonable
cafeteria in the basement.)

The Museum of Science in Cambridge is awesome. Imax theater and Hayden
planetarium.

Boston has a very nice Aquarium right on the harbor. Also,
the USS Constitution is moored in Boston Harbor in Charlestown
which is directly across the Charles River.
It is affectionately known as 'Old Ironsides' and is the oldest
comissioned vessel in the US Navy.

The North End is an old section of town that has an Italian
flavor and abounds with good restaurants.

The old North Church, of Paul Revere fame is in the North
End, info is here:
http://www.cityofboston.gov/FreedomTrail/oldnorth.asp

Copley Place is a nice area for shopping, the young lady will
like that. There is a skywalk from the Marriott that will take
you to some food courts on the other side heading towards
the Hilton Hotel.

Of all the restaurants in Beantown, my faves are Grill 23 near
the Park Plaza. Davio's is also in that neighborhood, and their
food is great. Expensive, but one good meal should be in the
program.

No Boston trip is complete without a walk around Harvard Yard
and Harvard Square. Take the Red Line to Cambridge. The
Harvard COOP is a great bookstore if you like that kind of thing.

Enjoy your trip.

- Ok, you can't pahk the cah in hahvid yahd.
- "Wicked Pissah" means really really awesome
- If you can't Sox tickets, get a tour of Fenway. You can get tickets at The Souvenir Store on Yawkey Way.
- If you like beer, the Sam Adams and Harpoon breweries are here.
- Go to the Prudential building, up to the top. They call it the Skywalk or something.
- The Harvard area is cool.
- Duck Tours
- You can't swim in the Charles River.
- It's not "Going to Cape Cod", it's "Going down The Cape".
- Check out Quincy Market, and eat at Pizzeria Regina
- Go to the North End
- Go see the USS Constitution

If you can make it, there's a part of Boston called Allston. There, on Harvard Avenue, there is a music shop called Mr. Music. If it's not too out of the way, stop in and check the stuff out.

P-town

When you are on the Cape, be sure to spend time at the Cape Cod National Seashore. A big chunk of it lies right outside of downtown P-town and if you have time you can grab a bus (the flex bus) to the visitor center down the road in Eastham. From there it is a reasonable hike to the beaches (which are spectacular) and if you are particularly hardy you can go swimming but the water on the ocean side is freezing. The beaches on the cape side are merely cold.

Plus 1 on the suggestions for Boston that have already been given. There will be plenty to do within walking distance and if you jump on the T, you can get to Harvard Square pretty easily.

Even if you don't go to game at Fenway - even hanging around the park and Kenmore Square as the crowd files in or watches the game from a nearby sports bar might be fun for both of you.

Newbury Street is the fashionable shopping street - I'm not sure what 30-something year old women are into but my teenaged daughter loves Juicy Couture and Johnny Cupcakes.
