So my family is on our annual NYC vacation and I was wondering what is there to do during the day that doesn't cost an arm and a leg . I've found plenty of stuff at night (music, open mics and such) but I can't seem to find much during the day. Of course, there's shopping and visiting music stores but I'm thinking along the lines of events (plays, musicals, shows, etc). Any ideas?

as an architect, i love to go see buildings--you might like that too, since you are a photographer...the guggenheim is a cool place, near central park too...lots of people watching opportunity everywhere
DUMBO--down under manhattan bridge overpass...this area sometimes has cool stuff going on, great views back to manhattan
...anyhow, that's an 'outsiders' perspective, from someone who loves NYC

As an African American, especially one whose Dad is an immigrant, you should check out the African Cemetary National Park in Lower Manhattan. Most people don't know that Lower Manhattan was the country's largest black cemetary until the end of the 18th century. About 20,00 Africans were buried there.
Visit Central Park, and go to Harlem and check out the Apollo.

Right behind Bryant Park is the NY Pulbic Library. The Library is currently hosting a free exhibition commemorating it's 100th year with some interesting items. Celebrating 100 Years | The New York Public Library

55 Bar is the place for jazz at night, not sure who's playing there tonight though. http://55bar.com/
