In a few weeks I'll be in Amsterdam for about nine days. The first four days I'll be occupied with the Audio Engineering Society convention, but after that it's full exploration time.
I haven't been there since 1994. I want to visit the Annefrankhuis again, and NEMO, too. What else do you recommend?
I also hope to meet up with some local TBers!
I'll post my best travel photos at http://www.panoramio.com/user/483134 . |

Hit up the coffeeshops if you're into that whole thing... if not you have the Van Gogh museum, Rhynx (sp?) museum, Heineken brewery, and lots of local theater/music. I'm sure locals can chime in more than I can.

| | | | Go to Leidsplein.
Visit the Bulldog Cafe, and once you've worked up a good case of the munchies, walk out the door, and make a right, and another right down the street at the edge of the plaza.
Walk down about a block and a half, and check out Maya Shawarma (on the left about mid-block).
If it's still there, it's one of the best damn sandwiches on the planet. |

There's not much in the way of music stores in the downtown area.
Food wise, they have these great round wafer things (name escapes me) that you place over a cup of hot coffee. It melts the inside of the wafer.
Rijsttafel is simply incredible and fun eating. It's Indonesian food. There's a good Indonesian restaurant downtown near a popular tram stop. There's a bit of a square outside. Your hotel concierge can point you to it.
You could hop on a train to The Hague. It's about 45 minutes away. There's a really nice beach area there with a board walk that goes for miles. Nice way to spend a day.
Have fun. If you're bored, jump on Easyjet and pop down to Geneva and try out my Sadowsky.

I recall that it's a great city for walking around in. |

Also, there is a really good restaurant called the Blau Hollander, which serves proper Dutch food. Not sure exactly where it is, but if you Google it then I'm sure you can find out.
Obviously there are some museums and art galleries - the Scheepvaart maritime museum is a good one.
EDIT: Just check it out on the internet - looks like the Scheepvaart is closed for renovation, until the end of the year.

The Boat tours of the harbour are good, as are the markets. You have to visit the red light district, just to see the prostitutes behind their glass windows.
I highly recommend the Zoo, we spent a good day there. |

wait!!! i live there!!!!
some places you should visit:
Leidse Plein (major square for goin out at night)
Museum Square (big as$ lawn with the van Gogh and Rijks Museum next to it, also is where the concertbuilding is)
Madame Tussaud's (wax statue museum, real fun. sits next to the palace on the dam)
Take a boat tour through the canals (best way to see old amsterdam)
Artis Zoo (the country's oldest zoo, especially nice if you're bringing kids, still fun for adults though)
Anne Frank Huis (you already mentioned that)
Diamond Works (in Amsterdam there's a whole lotta diamond processors, theyre all close to the Museum Square)
NEMO is fun too
The Flower Market (on the coolsingel i thought, it's all on the docks of the canals and on boats)
Heineken Brewery (never been there though)
The Vondel Park (it's like New Yorks Central Park, only then smaller, great place to spend lunchtime or even an entire afternoon)
There's prolly a whole lotta places you could go, but these are the most well-known
When are you going? |
