Things to do in Texas?

Sign in to disble this ad
On Wednesday I'm leaving good ol' California for Texas, Greenville Texas to be exact. It was a hard decision to leave the state I've grown up in, but I feel I'm ready for a change.

But it brings up the question, what is there to do in Texas? What are the music hot spots that I should look into? (preferably metal friendly spots) And is there anything else a newcomer should be aware of? I have only visited a couple times and thought it was nice out there, but the locals didn't seem too hip to my foot long mohawk out there, but I am no longer mohawked so hopefully this time its goes a bit better!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, ANYTHING is appreciated.

I used to live just outside of Greenville, Texas! In fact, I'm still "Mayor-For-Life" of Floyd.

You'll have an hour+ drive to find metal. There's lots of space between stuff in Texas.

Oh yeah, I do know this! hahaha
I'm guessing Dallas is probably going to be my best shot?

Yeah, Dallas and Fort Worth both have music scenes but I couldn't really tell you about the metal scene. I saw Sleepytime Gorilla Museum at a club in Fort Worth once.

Try this site. I just googled "metal bands in Dallas" and it came up. Looks like a list of clubs and bands. Check it out...it might help you.

DFW Heavy Metal - Clubs

EDIT: Almost forgot places like O'Reilly's and Click's. I have a buddy who used to play at O'Reilly's some and Click's a lot. So don't forget about those places.

reasons to move to texas:
-no state income tax
-housing is plentiful and affordable
-In most cases, you will not have trouble finding good food
-There are a *few* great state universities that are pretty cheap
-Sports teams are numerous and consistently competitive
-Most Texans are quite friendly
-Good music scene= Denton/jazz, Dallas/metal, houston/rap, Austin/Austin, etc
-Lots of open space outside of the cities- hill country is quite lovely.
-DFW has world class architecture and art museums (Kimbell, etc)
-Weather is pretty good, we usually get snow but only a few weeks of winter. It's in the 80's here now...

reasons to stay away from texas:
-DFW area is a concrete jungle- endless highways and traffic
-Public transportation not widely available or particularly effective= you will need a car and the means to pay for gas.
-Without getting too political, it can be a bit one-sided around here, which is great for half of the country.
-Flat, not too much in the way of outdoor recreation in the DFW, Austin is a bit better as are some places out west.
-Housing construction is pretty poor, low codes
-Food is tasty, but very hard to find healthy food. Texas is not generally open to vegetarians, Austin being the biggest exception.
-It is difficult to find a sense of community in many neighborhoods; it seems most texans like their privacy and independence.

i welcome input from other texans; these are my observations from living here for over 20 years.

I concur. A couple of other things...

Lakes are everywhere. Lots of water related stuff you can do.

Back in the day (80's/90's) I think Deep Ellum was the metal hotspot around here. It's coming back to life.

The Ft Worth downtown scene.

I definitely agree on the public transportation. It is a very spread out area. If I used public transport, I'd drive five miles to the bus station and walk ten miles after I got off the bus. Lol!

So what's your real motivation for leaving? Seriously, if you're just bored then make some lifestyle adjustments. I'm assuming friends and people who care are trying to dissuade you. Can't blame them for that.

Get a new place, try some new hangouts. I don't know enough about you so it's all assumption. Just some stuff to think about. Just take a shot at changing your scene a little bit and see if it helps.

ok, I'm sober, but words are making me sick right now, so I'll keep it short and say that there are alot of reasons I'm going
1. A change
2. I heard the job market out there is better
3. Cost of living is cheaper
4. Grandparents really, really need some help around their property
5. My sister could use some help with her daughter, being a single working mother and all, and I love my little mischievous niece to pieces. (she'll be 3 in september)

also, thanks for all the replies everyone, mucho appreciado! (don't know if thats actual spanish or not, don't be offended)

Now off to pray at the porcelain shrine.....
