I remember those...I kinda wanted them and my dad (an amateur cabinet-maker with a semi-serious shop setup in the garage) started teaching me to use the real thing(s).

Some years ago, San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art had an exhibit of glass pipes...some people had no idea what they were looking at, aside from blown glass objects.
