My friend and I were talking last night about things we've put off buying so that we could acquire new gear. So I thought it might be interesting to post here the same question.

What are some things that you want(ed) in life but have sacrificed and gone without so that you could purchase a new bass, amp, or both?

For me its been a digital camera, PS3, new TV, computer, I've even put off purchasing a car in the distant past so that I could get new gear.

Lunches out, mostly. Sure, I get tired of eating the same sandwich nearly every day but when I do I just remind myself that it tastes like new bass.

Fridays and Saturdays out at bars. $5-6 drinks add up real fast.

I gave up any chance I ever had at living a normal life. And cell phones.

I went without driving until I was 20 (17 for license in NJ) because I bought a month-long trip to Europe & a double bass before I started college.

and this. If I wanted to drink out, I'd drink during a gig (when they're free).

This.

And I do the work on my own cars and basses so I can stretch my dollar a little farther.

Sex. Buy a new bass/amp/whatever, torque off the Queen, sleep on the couch. She usually comes around. Usually...

Our band needed a new PA for an outdoor show. Everyone else in the band is laid off and broke except one guy who just bought a house and is struggling. I shelled out the dough. I get paid once every two weeks. I made rent, couldn't manage the electric bill. No electric now for two weeks.

Oh yeah, the show got cancelled. We have a next show on Saturday, so I'll get most my money back then, and all later. I'm grateful for my headphone amp. I've been taking cold showers, and my girlfriend is angry because she doesn't want to come over to my newly Amish apartment.

Food mostly \, I'm amazed how much money adds up when you're eating out for lunch most days.
IMO not eating lunch can save alot of dough it's really a meal you don't need.
If I go out the the bar I get the cheapest beer.

really just keeping in mind "Do I really need that?"

I've also gone without heat and electricity for november and december in Michigan!! to pay a student loan bill, not my proudest moment.

Mostly hookers.

But half the time I just paid them so I'd have a captive audience while I droned on and on about the virtues of various envelope filters, why I like a 2x12 cab better than a 4x10 and my ideas for my next custom bass.

True dat. When I make my wife listen to that stuff it usually ends up costing me some jewelry. Hookers are cheaper in the long run. It's just sound economics.

This. I stopped buying bass equipment and started buying other stuff, mainly audio gear. Too bad that is just as expensive as bass equipment.
