Interestingly enough, about 350,000 non-electric vehicles catch fire every year.

About 100,000 of those are fuel ignition post crash.

I saw on some t.v. show about early steam-powered cars that when internal combustion engines became the new thing on the market, the steam engine producers called them "explosion engines" to scare people away from internal combustion.

Of course, steam engines are actually susceptible to exploding whereas gasoline engines will more likely just blow a head gasket (or something else that doesn't kill the driver) when they overheat...

Yes, GM will loan you a Corvette if you're scared your Chevy Volt will catch fire

Looks pretty ho-hum to me.

I never stop marveling at the people who think every car should work flawlessly and who panic whenever there's a fault. Granted, if my car burned to a cinder I'd be looking for some answers, but I'd take the insurance money and move on.

Here's a key sentence in the Corvette story: But Martin says that they're not concerned about a rush of owners running to grab a Corvette ZR1 or a Camaro SS for a multi-month green reprieve. Mostly because the type of person who buys a Volt presumably isn't interested in high horsepower for the type of drives they're taking in a Volt.

Right on target. The Corvette is the ANTI-Volt.

The big cheese at GM wants gas prices raised so that more people will buy The Volt. Makes me want to set fire to one.

Or not, since gas has gone down about $0.20 a gallon in the last two weeks around here.

Apparently the fires only occur a few weeks after an accident. That seems like an appropriate amount of time to get out of/away from the car, no?

Lithium ion batteries catch fire when they're left damaged and charged. Surprise.

This thing has been blown way out of proportion by everyone who hates GM and the Volt, and will try to make them fail any way they think possible. Just watch Fox News sometime.

So they smashed a prototype volt into a steel pole and leave the mangled corpse of a car in the rain for 3 weeks before it catches fire from a malfunction that wouldn't even be an issue if it were a production vehicle.

I fail to see the problem.

Here too...It's $3.39 a gallon and I was freaking out because I was expecting it to go up for Thanksgiving.

Anyways the Volt is a new concept overall isn't it? Priuses weren't perfect when they were 1st made and neither were fuel injected vehicles. I remember Volvo's "K-Jet" mechanical fuel injection which was a combination of a carburetor and fuel injection. It had problems galore just like this Volt has.

Now granted I loathe Chevy, but at least they're attempting to make a green vehicle. These new damned cars should at LEAST get 40MPG. Ffs, my 76 Valiant gets 30MPG.

It's a new car, if something happens to it, you're covered. Chevy will issue you a new car...What's the problem?

The real danger is if some senior citizen gets rear ended by an out of control Audi and their Prius unintendedly accelerates and T-bones a Volt. That's curtains.

Probably not until gasoline is no longer in demand...
