decide to stay at a hotel for the night. the room costs $30.00 for the night, so they decide to split the bill and pay $10.00 each. they pay the hotel manager and head up to their room. once they get to their room the hotel manager knocks on the door and tells the three men that this particular night there is a special and the room is only going to cost them $25.00, so the hotel manager has $5.00 in one dollar bills. he hands each man one dollar and decides to just keep the remaining $2.00 because it cannot be evenly distributed. so each man has payed a total of $9.00 having each received a dollar back. $9.00 x 3 men = $27.00, add the $2.00 that the hotel manager kept for himself and that adds up to $29.00. where is the missing dollar?

In the managers pocket. They paid $10 a piece. The manager came back and refunded them three bucks total and pocketed the remaining $2. That's $30.

They paid $30 for the room but all got $1 change. So they in the end paid $27 for the room, even though it was offered at $25, the manager kept $2, hence why they paid $27.

$30 - there's nothing missing - they never paid $9 each, they should have paid $8.33 each, but they paid $10 each and received a $1 refund. The $25 is irrelevant as it doesn't relate to the price they actually paid.

There is no missing dollar. The 3 guys paid $25 for the room, the owner kept $2 (consider it a tip). That makes $27. The owner gave them back $1 each. That makes $30.

You are counting the tip twice by saying "they paid $27, plus the $2 the owner kept". That's why you end up with a missing dollar.
