Ticket price gap between genres?

Sign in to disble this ad
hello folks,

i was just looking for a few shows i'd like to see in switzerland and there it struck me. i would like to see richard bona which i would put into the jazz category as well as nile with krisiun and 3! other bands. they play metal, obviously.
now check this: richard bona tickets cost $65 and nile and the rest only $38.
this is a huge, huge difference. one band costs almost twice as much as 5 bands??? what in gods name justifies this? can't be the venue alone.

now i'm seriously asking myself if i play in the wrong genre to make some money (metal).

thanks

Man... a LOT goes into the deciding factor of ticket prices...

Band travel
band guarantees
popularity
pre-sale
outside ticket sales
venue
insurance

Genre alone is probably one of the LEAST contributing factors.

For every $65 jazz show there's probably dozens of free shows at, like, coffee shops

as for metal, when was the last time you could go see Iron Maiden for $38. Also, metal wins HANDS DOWN in the monitary fight against, in this case, jazz when it comes to merchandise.

so you wouldn't say that jazz generally pays more than metal if you compare the popularity status of those bands?
i would say nile and bona are both equally popular in their respective genres.
even if you take into account all the factors you've listed, i think there's still a huge gap since it's 5:1 in band count...

Exactly! You don't see many people walking around with a Rich Bona shirt on and these bands put themselves on every kind of merch they
can and practically rob you with the prices they charge. I bet through out the tour they at least match their ticket sales in merch sales.
