Tie Knot Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Heyya good sunday morning! Question for you guys: how do you tie a knot like this? I know it's a windsor knot, but I can never tie it so that it has that fold/crease in the middle...

The crease down the middle has little to do with the knot, perhaps more to do with the quality of the tie, and whether it's a thick or thin cloth. Your best bet is to fiddle with the tie in order to impart that crease before you snug it up.

How I do it is manually creating that little crease and then tightening the knot to get it to stay.

You have to fiddle with it the first few times, and then it will naturally go there. (No double-entendre intended, suckers!)

I have only started wearing suits to work recently and am not qualified at the Windsor knot yet. I'd like to start using it since the way I do it now doesn't work well unless the tie is fairly large.

Most of my ties are on the thicker side, but I do have a few thin/medium ones. With my ties, when the knot is perfect, the ends are usually too short; but when the ends go down to my belt buckle, the knot is usually smaller than desired... It's somewhat frustrating.

Tie people call it the dimple. The trick is to form a little 'M' shape in that region of the fabric as the knot is formed, but not yet snugged. The legs of the 'M' point towards your chest. The sides of the 'M' are held by your thumb and middle finger, your index finger forms the dimple in the center. Then you maintain that 'M' shape as you snug the knot.

There is some interesting mathematics in the analysis of tie knots, and knots in general.

My favorite in the above book is Knot No. 4, the 'Nicky'. Compact, symmetrical, and elegant. It is one of those odd knots that starts with the tie inside out around the neck, and the small end passed over the large as the first move.

^ Well, I have nothing to add. I do the dimple with a Windsor knot and it works well.

One trick I learned although it might be bad etiquette when I had to dress up for a job is to not untie the tie once I had a good knot. Just undo it enough to get over my head and kept them on a hanger.

If we were to have a tie "sticky" this would be it......

I usually rock a half windsor, and the dimple pretty much comes as a standard.

I was coming in here to say the exact same thing. I must admit that I am a bit of a tie geek. I have four knots that I use: Windsor, half windsor, four in hand and Pratt. My favorite is the Pratt, looks great, works on almost any tie, almost any occasion, and I can tie it to perfect length in the dark. I am totally buying that book.

Once you get the basic procedure of tying a tie down, it really comes down to tie quality. You don't need to drop $200 on a tie, but higher end ties take and hold a knot much better than the ties at Wal-Mart.

Truth. I am getting some custom made for my wedding in November and I can't wait to get them. Most of my ties are in the $60 range. Silk makes the ties.

This is my 3rd time endorsing this website on talkbass - http://www.thetiebar.com/ Seriously. You'd be hard pressed to find much difference between a tie that costs a hundred bucks or more, and these. I buy almost all of my ties from here

Another touch that nobody around here does but me - go to JoAnn fabrics and find you a nice pattern for your pocket square. I've gotten a few eye popping ones from there...and I usually don't even get the ends rolled. I just fold them accordingly and put them in my pocket. That's just laziness, though
