Also, have you noticed the skinny little pencil ties in stores lately? What's up with those?

Pencil style isn't new, it was super popular in the 80s. Take a look at David Bowie back then. It's a fad that comes and go, much like leather laces.
However, classic tie and double windsor are an instant classic. You can never go wrong. |

When the tie is properly tied, the tip of the tie will be at the center of the belt buckle. When tying a full Windsor, many ties have insufficient length to reach the belt buckle and still have enough of the back part to slip through the keeper on the back of the front part. A half Windsor can alleviate this problem.
Another thing: Do not EVER wear a tie with a short-sleeve shirt, unless you live in Arizona. Those people don't seem to care how doofus they look. Besides, it's hot over there. Anywhere else, you will immediately be identified as a Mormon missionary. Why give lip service to the formality afforded by a tie, when you're going to cancel it out with a short-sleeve shirt?
Never tie a four-in-hand unless you're under 25 years old. Never wear a bolo tie unless you are, again, in Arizona.

Found this diagram on Wiki for the full Windsor. Isn't this the most useless image ever?

I really don't know what the knot I use is called. I always thought it was a Half-Windsor, but Wikipedia says no. |

lowsound
EDIT: so I just found out that a four-in-hand is what I thought a half windsor was. Interesting.

Ever hold a bass for an hour with a suit on in a Catholic Church with no AC on a hot day? You'll be glad you have a short-sleeve shirt on, and if you look like a doofus, you won't care!

After watching that how-to-tie-a-four-in-hand knot I even found out I tie what I guess would be a half four-in-hand |
