Tips on things to see in San Diego?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I found out a couple weeks back that I'm presenting at a conference in San Diego, come August.

I know there'll be a lot of guys who have been to San Diego and a number who stay there.

Any sights worth going out the way to see? (presentation is on the first day, so I'll hopefully have some free time during the rest of the week!)

So far, my "to do" list simply comprises of the USS Midway and the San Diego Zoo.

Have you tried a burrito before? They have those here. And there's also a long body of water here called the Pacific ocean. It's typically west of us.

There is Sea World of course. The Wild Animal Park in addition to the zoo. Other Maritime Museums within walking distance of USS Midway. When I was a kid there were tours at the San Onofre power plant, I don't know about now. Legoland for the kids and many tribal casinos are in range.

The Carvin factory is there. You can check out their showroom, that's what I plan to do if I ever go to SD. Also, Bass San Diego.

I've had tortilla's (yes, filled!) before, so, yes, I think!

I think I'd see that from the USS Midway, no?

Cool, will have a look out for those too!

Never actually thought of that. Could go visit a shop that actually sells basses . . . that may be expensive, and I don't think expenses would cover it

if you are at all interested in architecture, you could go up to La Jolla and tour the Salk Institute...if you're there for the week, would be worth heading up the coast to LA too, plenty to see there as well

Taylor guitars is in El Cajon. You can tour their plant and see how they are made. Lots of places to eat from little cheap Mexican food stands to 5 star restaurants. You can go para sailing, sky diving, scuba diving or snorkeling. There is hot air balloon rides in Del Mar, tons of stuff to do at the beach.

Seaworld, the Zoo and the road back North are all good things to see in San Diego.

When I go to San Diego - here's a short list of things I never miss, even though I've seen them over and over again.

* Kansas City Barbeque at 600 W. Harbor Dr. Good food and it's the bar where Top Gun filmed the bar scenes. Lots of Top Gun movie trivia there, too.
* Balboa Park (but don't go alone in the evenings). It's a beautiful park, but there are some areas....need I say more?
* Spreckels Pavilion in Balboa Park on Sunday - There is a free organ concert every Sunday at 2:00 PM. The Pavilion has one of the world's largest pipe organs.
* The Gaslamp Quarter. Shops, clubs, food, music - what more can you ask for?

My music must-haves: Belly Up Tavern, Brick by Brick, The Casbah, Croce's, House of Blues, and Lestat's West.

two words.. Pacific Beach. If you have kids, maybe not so much. if you are looking for some nitelife without paying downtown prices, head to PB. Go a little north and La Jolla Cove is very cool, Gliderport is cool to see crazies jump off a cliff (above blacks beach. do some research on blacks beach first.. hahaha), Mt. Soledad and the ever-disputed cross... Scripps Aquarium is fantastic, but a little small. nevertheless it's a great spot to check out. the live kelp tank has to be seen to be believed. Old Town is neat too..

I can help, Im born and raised, these are my stomping grounds..

No, you're seeing it from the wrong angle. Trajectory is important.

We have shopping malls. They're a lot like your "shoppes" only all stuck together to enhance your shopping experience.

I might have to fly to San Diego in August so I can meet you. What are you presenting on? Will you bring me some fresh Guiness?

I got to watch all the 4th of July fireworks from a few miles out on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. John C. Stennis a couple years back. Highly recommended.

Gaslamp District is the place to go out and party.

Of course, the border is only a short train ride away - go to revolution street and get you some.

The Midway and the Zoo are definitely cool. I prefer Phil's Barbecue (on Midway Drive) by far over Kansas City Barbecue. El Indio taco shop on India Street is good - get some taquitos there. Be sure to go to Bass San Diego ... it's a little out of the way, but worth the trip (no affiliation). In August, the beach is good. La Jolla Shores if you just want beach, Pacific Beach if you want beach town.

You may want to hit In N Out Burger. People in Texas are so happy they got a couple, they're crying for joy. If you're staying near the bay, Seaport Village is fun to wander around in. They have bands in the Gazebo on Saturdays and Sundays. If you like the night life, hit the Gaslamp District downtown. I'll put up some more as I think of them.

PM me a week before you hit town. I may be in Ireland, but I don't know.

Good idea! They only had 3,000 murders in TJ last year. Decapitations are popular.

Sorry to disappoint, but I hate lamb, mutton etc.

However, the minced up aberdeen angus worked quite well in it, as did some venison, tho it was a bit deer

Sounds exciting, I assume they share a commonality with our Shopping Centers, in that they are overrun with angsty teens

Thanks for all the tips so far, I now have a growing "Bar List" and a small but growing "Bass List". Beaches will definately be visited, gas lamp district looks awesome!

I had considered jumping the border and going to Tijuana, but a Mexican friend at work said the Donkey Shows were a myth

Presenting at the SPIE Optics + Photonics Conference, some funky, novel techniques and devices using Optical Trapping/Tweezing.

I would bring some Guiness, but I fear your lovely TSA would assume it to be a dangerous device

Never know, may end up flying past you in that case!
