Tired, annoying phrases

Which ones grind your gears? Today at the airport I heard business doods on their cell phones saying "just want to touch base" at least three different times. Sick to death of hearing that. You?

DwaynieAD 03-14-2013 08:50 AM

"this, that, and the third" because frankly I'm not even sure that one makes any sense.

TBird1958 03-14-2013 08:56 AM

"Quick question"

I really dislike this, it's never quick.

Atoz 03-14-2013 09:06 AM

When the contractors at my office are going to be out of town and unavailable for some period of time, they refer to it as being "out of pocket," as in "I'm going to be at the AUSA conference next week, so I'll be out of pocket until next Friday." I can't stand it. When I hear a guy say that, I just want to throw a pot of hot coffee in his face.

dmusic148 03-14-2013 09:15 AM

Yes! Never heard that particular phrase, but yes, pot of coffee to the face!

"At the end of the day".

Not sure why, but irritates me to no end. When I hear it in meeting or on TV. This happens:

When people say "it's none of my business, but......."

Well if its none of your business ,, don't ask me the frickin question .

MJ5150 03-14-2013 09:26 AM

"I'm sorry, but......"

No, saying sorry first does not excuse you from being a jerk.

When I hear it, I jump in quickly and say "...you go to sleep". Equally annoying and hopefully enough to make them not use it again.

Other annoyances:

"To be honest" - so you're lying the rest of the time?
"With respect" = I'm going to disrespect you
"Just saying" = I'm not just saying, I have a very clear unspoken agenda
"To be fair" = I'm trying to cancel out all the unfair things I just said

SoVeryTired 03-14-2013 09:28 AM

Oh yes, an another:

"Chillax" - why take two words that mean the same thing and force them together into an unholy hybrid?

agent77 03-14-2013 09:28 AM

"Let's do this"

and no, you can't touch my bass:)

Root 5 03-14-2013 09:30 AM

"My bad."

Really stupid, annoying expression.

scorpionldr 03-14-2013 09:38 AM

"Oh well that doesn't mean ALL people do _______"

That I hate with a passion.

qervo 03-14-2013 09:39 AM

In the south people will say anything rude or insulting but as long as they follow it up with "bless their heart" they think they are excused from being snobby. For example : oh did you hear Mary Joe got pregnant and doesn't know who the father is? She's really a poor pitiful thing ,, bless her heart.

Biggbass 03-14-2013 09:40 AM

" I'm just sayin'..."

Yeah, I agree with that one. Sometime I laugh and tell people "Now that was not a quick question."

Another one of mine "To make a long story short." I usually say " Too late."

I've always enjoyed the 2 words combined. for example: ordinarily and normally: normalarily.

horrible and atrocious: horrtrocious

that one annoys me as well. I'll usually follow it up with "no, go ahead and lie to me"

that's an old sitcom joke that I have never heard in real life practice.

^^^ I moved to Alabama 7 years ago. I hear it all the time. Smh...

20db pad 03-14-2013 09:45 AM

I've seen folks use "OOP" - but always as "Out Of Plant".
