There's a farmers market near my house, and every Sunday morning since it opened this summer I've gone down and bought the freshest, ripest tomato I could find, washed it off, and just ate the whole thing like you would an apple or a peach. (More like a peach, actually, since tomatoes and peaches are impossible to eat whole without making a complete slob of one's self.)
Anyway, this week's tomato was just a little bit of spongy inside - far more 'hothouse' than 'homegrown'. Guess this means the best tomatoes of the summer are behind us, at least in the Northeast.

---------------- | Yeah, I'm afraid so.
I usually grow my own and I didn't get as many tomatoes this year as I did in previous years. The ones I did get were very meaty without a lot of pulp and I swear some of the best tasting I've had. Just not a lot of them.
My zucchini and squash plants ran over my pepper plants. I got some zucchini that were just enormous. I'll bet some were about 24" long or better. No peppers though.
I started to clean up my garden today. I cut back the squash vines. I have a couple more green tomatoes on the vine so I'll leave them and hope they get a little bigger.
Back to store bought. |
