Tommy's Burgers

Sign in to disble this ad
I have had a serious jones for a Tommy's burger lately. I went out and got the fixin's together to make my own, and did a pretty darn good job of simulating the chili, but I can't replicate the street corner lot that the original is located on. But I got darn close with the burger, even getting the condiments in the right order! Anyone else here like Tommy's? I know it's not the most healthy thing to eat, but there was something about stopping by Beverly and Rampart at 3am after a session on our way back to Orange County...and getting the double meat, double cheeseburger "all the way".

The chili is what makes them what they are- it is a tomato-less, thick chili con carne that is easy to make, but hard to duplicate. Anyhow, I copied it, and built my own for lunch today. First Tommy burger I have made at home. Turned out fantastic!

Man, haven't had one of those in years. I don't usually put crap like that in my body anymore, but for Tommy's I could make an exception (with chili-cheese fries--might as way go all the way). Going back to CA next month; not going to make it far enough north to hit the original, but it looks like they opened one in SD. Hmmm....

Oh man oh man, Tommy's is great.

I remember during finals week last semester (My 2nd to last semester of High School) me and a group of my buddies decided to go and get Tommy's and leave school. Our school's final schedule had it so it was:

Day 1: Period 2 & 4
Day 2: Period 3 & 5
Day 3: Period 1 & 6

So Day 1 I did my 2nd period final, and my buddies all had an ASB Ambassadors class 4th period (They helped out freshmen who were ****ups) so they had nothing. I had a math final. I rush through my math final (Got a B!) then told my teacher I had to go study for my Latin final the next morning. He lets me leave, and I meet up with the guys and we met up with a custodian who opened the doors for us and we went to Tommy's then one of the guy's house to play some pool.

The next day, most of us (4 out of 5 of us) had the same 5th period, and we were all done with the final really quick and the teacher gave us free time. We decided we should go get something else to eat and break out of school again. We decided on Pink's (famous chili dog stand in Hollywood). So we go up to our 5th period teacher and asked if it was cool with him if we left school to get food. He said "I don't give a ****, just don't get caught. And if you do, you told me you were going to the bathroom." Then he asks us where we're going, and we say Pink's. He tells us it's just down the street from some place he needed student volunteers to help packing on some computers that were being donated to charity. He offered to get us lunch if we helped him out. We agreed. We got to the place we have to do the packing, which was a rug store, and find out that the packing materials the charity had offered were... sparse to say the least. So I come up with the idea to use newspapers, and me and my buddy were driving up and down the streets of West LA taking entire stacks of newspapers, a lot of them LA X...Press which is a magazine for escort services. I wound up finding newspaper in my car for a month afterwards. There were about 12 guys who came to the charity thing along with our original group, so as we're all standing in line at Pink's, we decided to start calling our teacher "Dad" and embarrassing him. He took it like a champ, and got us all lunch.

Probably one of my funner HS experiences, and it started with Tommy's.

Man, that's an awesome story! I remember seeing Pink's, but I never ate there. In Georgia, where my dad lives, they have Nu-Way hotdog stands. They are small, red, and crack loudly when you bite into 'em.

Last time I was out in the LA area, I stopped on the way to the airport and got four double cheeseburgers at Tommy's. They put them in a box for me, then I got another to eat right there. I took the box of four and put them in my carryon bag, which they searched. The TwitsStandingAround (TSA) must have smelled them, cuz they singled me out. They wanted to take them away from me, but told them that these were for my boss in Texas, who had one years back. They still wanted to take them, so I told them that my boss was getting one, an I was eating the rest! They finally relented, and let me get on the plane with my fine-smellin' comestibles. I was offered a first-class seat in exchange for two, I said no. Another guy offered me $20 for one. I had to decline. When I finally got home, I stuck them in the fridge, and ate like a king for the next three days. Absolutely my favorite burger of all time.

Really glad I know the secret to their chili as well. Now I can make them at home!
