Top five best stand-up acts of all time

In no particular order:

- Eddie Murphy : Altough the first ten minutes of Delirious haven't aged well, he was one funny, outrageous guy that could do incredible impersonations before he turned into a Disney-muppet. His James Brown was so good, as was the ICE CREAM and "welfare burger" bits.

- Dave Chappelle : Killing them Softly is not only incredibly insightful, it's probably the most laughter packed routine ever. No dragging, not even for a second. Too bad the Chappelle Show got the better of him ; he has practically fallen off the side of the earth since 2006 and I doubt stand-up are in his plans in the near (or distant) future.

- Jerry Seinfeld : His stand-up might not have aged well and he can be pretty uneven at times (such is the case for observational based humor), but when he is on, HE IS ON. The bit about the horses in his recentish stuff is golden (Oatmeal, oatmeal, it's oatmeal time).

- George Carlin : What can be said about the man who penned the 7 words you can never say on television ? Altough with age he lost some of his originality by being more and more like a Hicks clone, even his last special was funny in a bitter, nihilistic way.

- Richard Pryor : Richard was the real deal. Again, his output was so large that it can be a bit unenven at times, but Live at Sunset Strip is my favourite routine of all time, by far. The way he talks about his freebasing accident that almost cost him his life (and was the reason he finally sobered up) with humility is really touching. He might have been a bit of $/%/$/$ in real life (so was the rumour), when he stood up on that stage, he looked fragile and human, wich made his humour even more powerful.

I think you can easily post Chris Rock & Robin Williams up there.
I love Seinfeld, but his stuff aged really badly.
As for the others you mentioned agree 100%.
Carlin, Pryor & Murphy are Awesome !!

Yeah, I like me some Chris Rock, but he sounds a bit Chappelle-light to me. Robin Williams I cannot stand, so that rules him out.

With Seinfeld, you have to remember that there was a time when joking about the spring loaded faucet at the airports WAS cutting edge.

I like all of those w/ the excteption of Eddie Murphy, but only because i've not seen much of his standup. Also, i like Jim Gaffigan. Would think he'd have quite a following on TB given the bacon humour.

Eddie doesn't have much standup: two albums and two shows wich can be seen on Youtube (Delirious and RAW), and that's basically it. What Eddie lacked in volume, he more than made up for in staying power and leather suits.

In no particular order:

The early days of Steve martin. I mean like Johnny Carson days.

Dennis Wolfberg. He died way too early

Lewis Black. Cracks me up!

Carlin. Saw him Live in the early 80's....almost died of laughter that night.

Steven Wright. He has the best dead pan delivery.

Just because they don't have comedy specials on TV every weekend doesn't mean they aren't doing comedy. The first thing he did when he got back from Africa was stand-up...I also seem to recall him breaking the record for longest set since then.

Argh, how did I forget Bill Hicks? In that case, for my list bump Chappelle from the top 5 and put Hicks in at #3.

Only two I can think of off the top of my head as being espcially good, Richard Pryor and Billy Connolly.
