Tornado Watch....in NY?!?

I was just watching TV and I got one of those scrolling emergency messages across the bottom of the screen. I didn't believe it so I flipped to the weather channel.
Apparently I'm in a potential tornado zone today.
Umm...I live in New York...on Long Island...about 20 minutes outside of Queens. There's tornado watch in effect until 8PM for most of Nassau County, Queens, and I think Brooklyn too.
What the hell is going on here!? I think there's been like 1 recorded tornado in this area in my lifetime. This is pretty much unheard of around here.
I'm a little freaked out right now.




OK correction. The tornado watch includes this whole damn region. New York, New Jersey, most of PA. Anyone in the area, be careful out there.

There was a tornado here in Australia the other day, first one big enough to do damage in my lifetime in the country to my knowledge.

Waterspouts are not super rare, however a tornado on the land, anything other than miniature ones we get in the desert, is almost unheard of.
