football is not really the kind of thing one does on a lark......touch/flag variations maybe......it's a complex team sport that moves fast and hits hard, and getting out on the field without some training could be deadly

If possible, enroll in a small school (NCAA Division III or smaller)that has football. THe skill and size of the athletes may be something you can work with.

What is your athletic background? Are you good at soccer or rugby? How big are you?

If you are here for a week or two, you probably won't be able to play in a "real" game, with helmets and pads and tackling. However, lots of people play "touch" or "flag" football on weekends, where the defensive player only has to touch the ball carrier with both hands or pull a flag off his belt to end the play. There is no tackling, so no helmets or pads are required. If you are here in the fall, you should be able to find some games like this. I think if you find a game, introduce yourself and explain your situation, people will let you play. We're friendly like that. especially if you bring beer.

If you're really down, you can try and play in a pickup tackle game, those are fun.

+1! You don't need to know the intricacies of the game to play on the line and knock heads. Just be aware that some people who play sandlot football play dirty.

As you're from Europe, I have to ask - do you mean football, or American football?

You probably could do alright at the small school level once you got used to the physical contact. Play some sandlot football just to get an idea of what getting hit is like, but if you can, try to go to school here and really play some football!
