toyoya 4runner catalytic converter theft

Sign in to disble this ad
Got out of work yesterday, turned on my car and it sounded like a motorcycle. Thought it might have been the heat so I drove around the block. It didn't stop. I took it into the mechanics and they called to tell me someone took the catalytic converter. It costs $1310 to get it replaced but insurance might cover it except for my $500 deductable.

I've been reading that this is common for 4runners because they are easier to get to. I hope th $50 in platinum they are going to get from it is worth the bad karma that will happen

Also does anyone know where to get an alarm for the converter? I thought I read somewhere that you can get one. If not I'm going to have them permanetly mount it to the car

You can weld the replacement on but that only prevents it from being stolen "quietly".

Not sure how much of that is the part. Either way, how can it be easy to take off but not cheap/easy to put on?

run razor wire around the bottom edge of your 4Runner. This will keep people from crawling underneath.

but other than that welding the thing in place is the only practical option. until they come up with a substitute for platinum is always going to be a high-dollar item, and catalytics are going to be high-theft items.

Sounds like an excuse to put a freeflow exhaust on your rig. If you are going to spend that much you might as well get a half a horsepower out of it.

Waste of time, everyone know that a K&N sticker will get you 5hp all by itself.

People really will take anything. I had the emblems swiped off my car one night, replaced them all only for them to be stolen again. Frigging college kids... There have been tons of car break in attempts on campus, thank goodness no one thinks that a 95 toyota camry could ever have anything valuable in it.

There is no bad Karma or good Karma there is only Karma.

Chances are the more you hope their choices will face them once again the more you will face more karmic hassle.

Do your part for the universe and get a free flow exhaust.

That sounds expensive. I had a new cat on my Ford last year, cost me £120.

It's amazing what people will steal. One exhibition I did (UK Motor Show), we screwed EMPTY CANS of rust proofing stuff onto our display because folks were stealing them.

Who the hell would steal an empty can? Over here locally, we have a saying for this... "They'd nick the steam off your piss if they could".

Its easy to crawl under a car and use a cordless sawzall to rip it out. Its not as easy to replace that part correctly.

I use to do HVAC work and got a call once to check out a problem the with AC in this small office building. It was about 3 stories tall and when I got on the roof I couldn't believe it someone tore all the units apart with a crow bar and ripped all the copper out. They didn't even kill the disconnects and we are talking about 460 volt 3 phase units! It was amazing the compressors were still running and everything. Like Rick James said "cocaine is a Hell of a drug".
