They are trying to "piece together what happened". Wth do they think happened? It's not hard to figure out. The boy in the clip gave us all the information we need. Sad story though.

that sucks, jee wow, it says PRIVATE PROPERTY. Railroad right of ways are private, dangerous and just stay away.

My bus yard is across the street from a major Y where the four roads come together thru riverside...and there's a crossing, and if i had a buck for every car that ran the gates I'd retire.

It's really really sad they were that stupid to go play on a live line, I don't have much sympathy for them.

How do people get hit by trains? You know where it's gonna go.

It's difficult to imagine how fast a train can come up on you at a good clip; sadly, a *little bit* of foolishness on a train track can sometimes cost an awful lot.

A train heading directly towards you looks a lot slower than it really is.

I wouldn't walk on a train track in any circumstance.

wow.. just like that stephen king book... .. forget the name. anyway this caught my eye: "but the identities of the other two have not been released. That likely won't happen until Monday, after officials can compare dental records"

WOW they have to compare dental records to id them....

personally i always stay away from train lines... being hit by trains runs in my family so i don't push my luck.

in any case i feel really bad for the boy... i can't imagine watching helplessly while your friends get smashed to smithereens by a train... just terrible. he's going to be haunted by that imagery for the rest of his life

3 girls walking all get hit and killed? I know its me being a terrible person but... seriously?

as somebody who lived near a train track for a little while.. trains are LOUD

VERY LOUD.

And imagine the suspicion the police have for him... Being the only survivor and all.

yea, you're right... they're obviously lying. no but seriously, it's plausible:

the railroad trestle is about 600 feet long, they said the girls were about half way across when they noticed the train which means they'd have to run 300 feet or 100 yards (aka a football field) to saftey. assuming they can sustain a run at 8mph (or 4 yards a second), which could be difficult on train tracks, it would take them about 25 seconds to clear the trestle. the train could be travelling at anything between 25 and 40mph, and thus would take between 16 and 10 seconds to clear the entire trestle. it's not outrageous to think that a group of 3 chatty teenage girls could be completley oblivious to a train's approach until it was within a 1000 yards.

Or they could jump off the bridge or to the adjacent track in, what, 2 seconds?

probably. you know me and my dad always had a saying for those situations.. you know where you're running away from a large object that's moving faster than you but instead of moving off the line it's travelling on you keep running straight ahead... anyway we called it "running in the path of the dunkin bagel". back in the 90s there was a tv commercial for dunkin donuts new bagels and their spokesperson (the little guy with the mustache that died) was running away from a giant bagel rolling down the street. much as i just described, he opted not to step out of it's path.

hahahah awesome.. i found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2Ako31BigY

another good example would be indiana jones running away from the giant boulder in the temple of doom.

still it's a great point you make.. and it makes me start suspecting that maybe they were up to something even stupider... like prehaps they thought they could race the train or something... one hopes nobody is actually that stupid but it would explain the circumstances (and why the police want to investigate it beyond the witnesses statement).

Almost every night, I put my daughter to bed and tell her a story. Sometimes it's about my days in school, or Marine Corps stories, or one of her favorites, Y&S (young and stupid) stories about some of the inexplicably stupid things I did as a kid. Most of them end up as near-misses, or injuries from mild to severe. My hope is that she'll learn about the consequenses "just goofing off" can have on her life. As parents, we all want to spare our children the nasty surprises life can dish out, particularly when we're not paying attention to our surroundings.

The tragedy is that these girls probably weren't stupid but, because of their limited life experience, didn't think about the consequences of walking along a narrow railroad bridge. (OT for a second ... the safety manual of a company I once worked for advised, "Never tie a guy wire to a railroad track.). OK, We're back. It's just so frustrating when you advise your children against unwise behavior, you often get, "I know, Dad," yet they do the behavior anyway.

All their poor parents can do now is ask the unanswerable: Why?

yeah seriously, unless the train was 300 ft. wide, they had other options...

I remember in the cartoons of the '50s the guy chopping down the tree, then running along its length to escape. I'm four years old, yelling at the TV, "Turn! You stupid son of a siberian sea snake!"

If any of you remember about a year ago 2 teens were killed in portland Oregon by a train that was outside of town , i believe it was doing over 100 miles an hour. It took about a week to identify the victims.
