transporting a car bought privately ? ( plates,reg,insu)

Sign in to disble this ad
what is the best way to transport a car bought from a private sale.

I'm buying a truck that does not have plates, reg, or insurance.

and i need to get it home( 50 mile drive)

I know i could always take the plates off my other car and throw them on there, but the consequences seem major.

Any other methods? other then having it towed?

One thing you could do is ask the seller to let you keep the plates for transportation and them mail them back to him or turn them in at the DMV. My brother has done this several times successfully.

Either this or purchase the car, get the keys and title and then register it in your name, and take your new plates with you when you pick it up. This is what I did when I purchased my car.

have the title and bill of sale on you as you drive it home, so if you get pulled over, you can show that you just purchased it and you are on your way home or the DMV to get plates. also make sure your insurance will cover you driving a vehicle not on your policy.

+1

Those are the rules in my state as well.

If you are going to transfer the plates from your old car to the new one you are allowed a certain amount of time from the date on the bill of sale. Just make sure you have all the paper work with you while driving. Double check this with your insurance company to make sure you will be covered. Things like this will differ from state to state.

You should be able to get a temporary plate from the DMV if what I posted above does not apply.

Just have the bill of sale with you and drive it the 50miles. I actually got pulled over about 2 minutes away from the house a I bought a car from, and the cop didn't hassle me. This was in Georgia, but I'm sure that as long as you're not driving like a jackass, you won't have any problems.

Find a friend with a dealer plate to help you move it.

Or a truck and trailer.

Temp plates, I have done that in the past. Just make sure that you look into what that takes before you transfer ownership, I had problems with that as well.

+1 Your title works as registration for the first 48 (or was it 72?) hours.

In Hawaii, the plates follow the vehicle. If a car is taken off the road (plates turned into the DMV), they reissue the original plate (or issue new ones if the car was off the road over a certain time period). Owners of a car do not transfer old plates from one vehicle to another over here. Our insurance company provides a rider to show the car is insured so that plates can be obtained from the DMV. Basically we take get the title transferred, take it to the insurance company to get the rider, then take the paperwork to the registry of motor vehicles to pay weight tax, fees, etc to get a new plate. A current safety inspection is also needed.

Get a temporary tag from DC.

There are more temp tags in the District of Columbia than there are cars to put them on.

called up DMV today, they wont issue me temp plates, since im not driving out of state.... ?! stupid

I have to drive down, get the title tonight... tomorrow morning i have to Insure it, and register & get plates, then drive back down there, then drive back

NJ sucks..

i understand you * could* just slap old plates on it and hope you dont get pulled over, but with my luck i'll get pulled over by a dick state trooper on I-95, and lose my license, and since i drive a company truck, i'll then lose my job. Which is no good

Unforutently, i need to take all precautions
