| | | | Trip to Rocky Point, Mexico?

I have a chance to go with a Church group and build a house in Mexico for the homeless. It will be a 3 day trip, early March.
My parent's are strictly against this, but I, deep within my soul, am yearning to go out there and do something.
I know there is still danger down in Mexico, however, I also know that it is focused only in certain parts of Mexico. There are Americans that still travel and even live in Mexico, and are fine.
What is your take? I am a young, foolish teenager; I feel that if I don't go, I will regret it for a long time. Am I wrong here?

Are you right to thoroughly research and fully prepare for what you're getting into before entering any new situation? Yes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Pe%C3%B1asco
I have no experience travelling abroad but if I went somewhere that was strange to me I'd keep it low key and bring no pricy anything (clothes, shoes, watches, jewelry, phones or other gadgets).
I'd also get a map of the town I was going to and study it so that I could get around without having to be so reliant upon locals for directions (I did this when I was still on the road).
A decent English-->Mexican phrasebook or dictionary + learning some of the local lingo in advance would be good too.
And above all I'd be nice to people & make some new friends by being a friend (lending a hand with this & that if I could) and I'd always watch my back and not assume anything.
Hopefully someone with pertinent experience will be along shortly...

Parts of Mexico have gotten to be that dangerous, eh?
WyrmDL, is there any way that you can help out around your home town or region until you're a little older and more experienced?
How about Habitat for Humanity? http://www.habitat.org/intl/maps/na....MDU6NDIgQU0%3d
Or Google about for local volunteer organizations. Perhaps you could find one which raises funds to finance home building projects abroad. |

And yes parts of Mexico are extremely dangerous, drugs dealers are fighting all over for control of territories, kidnappings, executions, robberies your name it, are an everyday thing.

It would seem then that WyrmDL's parents have a reason to be apprehensive about his (or her) planned trip south. |
