I practically died at the start when it got to [head dance]
And my friend wasn't joking when she wanted us to have a go at doing it while drunk going down her street the next time we met....considering we've already done The Imperial March from Star Wars and made random noises like ka-kaaaa and tooky tooky courtesy of Evolution

| | OVNIFX EXAR pedals rep for North & Central America | | Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: PDX, OR | | I watched a (subtitled) interview with him from Russian TV, where they asked him about the origins of the Trololo song and what he thought about all the current fame of it. Apparently the melody was originally an American Western song about a cowboy out on the open prairie, longing for his sweetheart back home. He was scheduled to perform that song, in Russian--but the censors decided that the lyrics romanticized bourgeois American ideals, and they forbade him from singing it. Rather than find a new song before going on the show, he just decided to sing the entire thing as "tra la la". He said it surprised him that Americans heard it as "tro lo lo". He also thought it was pretty funny that there was this sudden resurgence of interest in this performance, which to him was kind of a throw-away because of the censors. |

I just completed a dissertation on the influence of the Soviet regime on composition in Russia, so I had been writing about exactly this kind of stuff (although mostly relating to classical music - other arts were only a passing mention).
