Turn Signal Doesnt Blink?

Sign in to disble this ad
I drive a 1993 Mercury Topaz, and the left turn signal doesnt work properly. The arrow light comes up on the dash, but there is no clicking noise and the exterior light just stays solid. Im guessing its the fuse? I have no clue.

Anyone know how I can fix it?

Check your blinker fluid.

The blinking of your turn signal is controlled by a relay; go to an auto parts store, tell them you need a blinker relay for your '93 Topaz, and then ask them where to install it. It's a pull out the old part and plug in the new one type installation, kind of like a giant fuse.

LMAO! pretty funny indeed smart arse

my suggestion to the OP is to replace the relay for that signal which should be in one of the fuse boxes

Just take it to a garage and let people do it for you.

This. Actually, it's the time of year that you might want to put the winter fluid in.

Had the same problem with my '93 Sunbird. Checked all the fuses: nothing. Figured it was the relay stuck shut. This happened in winter, and as soon as summer hit BAM, relay works again LOL

Silly people...don't you own cars? When ONE of the lights controlled by the blinker is burnt out, then the resistance is changed and the relay doesn't click.

IOW, when it doesn't blink, it means a bulb is out! Put the blinker on, and, with the car in park, get out and check.

^ This

If that doesn't pan out, go to the auto parts place and ask for the blinker fluid.

In my car, and lots of other models, only one light out means the resistance changes, and the relay clicks faster. A blinker stuck 'on' means that the relay is dead. A blinker that fails to function completely is a fuse out or both bulbs out.

My Mercury Cougar blinks faster with a bulb out, and so does the Topaz, IIRC. I could be wrong, it's been 15 years since I last drove one.

+1.
I'd say relay.

AutoZone online used to have pretty good repair info, I presume they still do. You might see if they have directions for replacing the turn-signal-relay on your make / model.

I'm just amazed that someone is actually admitting to using their signal. I didn't think people knew how to do that any more.

The #1 thing to do with any problem like this is: Open your owner's manual and see if the answer is there. If you don't have a manual, get one!

Then replace the relay which has gone bad - sometimes a metal canister about the size of your thumb, mounted on the fuse block - but sometimes located elsewhere. How to find it? Look in the owner's manual.

I have a similar problem with my new-used car (this is the only known problem so far). Blinkers both work sporadically.

Probably the relay right?
