Very Sad here tonight as i sit with my Beamish and watch Planet of the Dead

Ok, well since David Tennant has given up the role as the tenth doctor recently, any idea who is going to take his place?

I still can't believe he was voted the best doctor ever...it was hard to beat Tom Baker (still my favorite)

anyone?

also how many episodes of Being Human have aired in the U.K.?

i was going to post this over on Bass Chat UK but they don't seem to have a misc. forum

Yes - we have known for many months now who would be the new doctor and about how he was so young - all the papers had pictures last week of how he is wearing a bow tie in new episodes being filmed!

I like how the doctor changes - it's certainly better written and produced nowadays! People look back with nostalgia, but I can remember it being really boring and drawn out with ludicrous plots ...

As a PS - I must say I liked the recent Torchwood "Children of Earth" 5-parter - like adult Dr. Who - but where was the Doctor, why didn't he turn up to help us out....?

Did he know they weren't that hard to beat?

I'm a DW obsessive, no shame there (see avatar). I found it highly disturbing that the new Doctor is younger than me.

And I hate to say it, but I though Planet of the Dead was the worst episode since the 2005 revival. Just pathetic. Waters of Mars looks extremely promising however...

I really liked David Tennant as The Doctor. He had a childish spark of insanity that I thought was brilliant.

He knew but wouldn't have been able to sacrifice a child in order to do so.

I thought the 5 part Torchwood was a masterpiece, almost Quatermass in it's scope and themes. Funny, I really didn't like the first 2 series at all. It must be Gwen...

There is a gallery of pictures of the new Dr Who here :

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/gall...who-matt-smith

...and there was a recent article about how he plays the role :

Matt Smith's Doctor Who proves a fashion flop

Matt Smith's Doctor Who is very this season. But shouldn't a Time Lord be above all that?
Hadley Freeman
The Guardian, Wednesday 22 July 2009
Article history

Doctor Who: Karen Gillan and Matt Smith. Photograph: Adrian Rogers/BBC

Hey, check out the new Burberry model, hanging out in the VIP section of Glastonbury, en route to meet Emma Watson and Pixie Geldof. Oh no, wait a fashion moment minute - it's Matt Smith, the all-new Doctor Who, on set in Cardiff.

I'm going to be honest here: I hate this look. Hate it. And I'm going to be even more honest: I hate it largely because it is not worn by David Tennant, who I adored so much as Doctor Who that it is possible part of my admiration had less to do with his thespian (and style) skills, and a lot more to do with me having unprofessional feelings for him.

But even aside from that quibble, I hate this outfit because it commits the ultimate fashion crime: it is trying too hard. It is a patchwork of "Grazia told me this is very fashionable right now" looks, and that is just wrong. A Time Lord should not read Grazia.

DM boots and all their lookalike cousins have, incredibly, been having what magazines insist on calling a "comeback" for some time, mainly on the basis that Agyness Deyn likes them. The shortened trousers are the signature style of the perennially trendy menswear designer, Thom Browne. Thanks to the joyless likes of Pharrell Williams, bow ties are very in now but, like, ironically (that sound you hear is the sound of style dying) and, yes, you can buy them at American Apparel. Of course you can.

Give the man a tweed jacket, top the whole shebang off with some posh boy big hair and - badda bing, badda boom - we have a fashion pin-up, made by committee.

True, some of the blame for this debacle must lie at the feet of my beloved Tennant because he made Doctor Who a fashion icon, with his tweedy suits and Converse trainers. But that was done with a light touch, this one is done by sledgehammer. And the end result is Indiana Jones on his day off, with an added dash of Grazia.

The most unacceptable aspects of the lookPosh boy hair
The doctor's back story may be sketchy but he definitely did not go to school with Hugh Grant.

Bow tie
Put on as many bow ties as you like, young man, but you are no Tom Baker and that is no scarf. Very displeasing.

Elbow patches
Not acceptable, even on an ironic level. Especially not on an ironic level. Who are you, a Time Lord or a geography teacher?

Trousers
Mens' fashion magazines love rolled-up trousers: they show off the shoes and that makes advertisers happy. The Time Lord has no such excuse
(I hope).

I agree entirely - I think Torchwood got into a writing cul-de-sac that made it deadly dull - maybe unless you were intrested in Gay Politics...

Gwen was a better lead, but I think the latest 5-parter benefitted from Peter Capaldi in the forefront, as a politician who will do anything regardless of morality (very topical!!!) and his new assistant who won't and stands up for what ordinary decent people would do!

Lots of new info today on the last couple of specials - the main points are:
  • The final two episodes are called "Nightmares Reign" and "The End Of Time".
  • Almost everyone from the RTD-era Who is back, including Donna (and family), Rose, Wilf, the Ood, Captain Jack, the Shadow Proclamation and... The Master (with blonde hair).
  • A trailer for "The End Of Time" was just shown at Comic-Con, showing almost all the returnees, including John Simm as The Master.
  • The next special (due to be shown in November) is called "The Waters Of Mars" and looks proper scary. A new trailer for it was shown at Comic-Con and is now on the BBC website.

Other notes about next year's new series:
  • There is a new TARDIS - looks like the William Hartnell-era one (white window frames, St. John's Ambulance badge, etc). It's supposed to look totally different inside too.
  • The Doctor also has a new sonic screwdriver
  • In the first episode they were filming, River Song (from "Silence In The Library") shows up
  • The new companion's name is Amy Pond
