U.S. Congress finally does something good for the people!!

The U.S. Congress passed and the President signed The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, or CALM.

TV commercials will not be allowed to be louder then the TV show's volume.

I have always hated when a commercial comes on and blasts you out of your seat.

I was going to post about this earlier. Sure, we'll all benefit from CALM, but Congress really should focus on more important matters than how much louder advertisements are than regular programming.

I agree with OP -- bugged me (and marital bliss) for years.
I was hoping the fiscal crap would have been worked out by now; but I guess we're all too stubborn.

Has long been done - too bad it took congressional action to tell them to knock it off.

I see it as them doing something ALL the people can appreciate for once.

Not just pander to one segment of the population.

I would assume everyone here knows it is still quite easy to make something sound alot louder than its actual SPL would indicate.

I'm pretty sure in Australia there is a law against loud ads, but they still sound alot louder then the shows.

They already weren't allowed to be louder than the TV show. Rather, they could be as loud as the loudest part of the show they are being aired next to.

At least that's what I've always been told...

Audio in ads does tend to be compressed to buggery.

Dang, there goes my idea for a device that blocks ads by monitoring the volume levels.

Only about 4-1/2 years. The legislation was introduced June 18th 2008. The bill passed on Sept 29th 2010. The FCC began enforcing the bill today.

I remember a few years back when TV went from analog to digital, and the government gave out vouchers for digital conversion boxes.

It seems like the government wants us to watch TV. I wonder why they're so concerned. Hmmmmm.
