So we've got Japan melting down, the Mideast going up in smoke nation by nation, rampant food and energy inflation, big-time unemployment, and flooding in parts of the U.S. with more very likely to come
And you turn on American media and listen to people talk and what's dominating the discussion.... iPad 2, Xoom, NCAA Basketball Tournament, NFL strike, Charlie Sheen, Oscars, American Idol.
People... wake the eff up. There is serious brown stuff hitting the fan all over the place and we'd best be paying attention to the really important stuff and keeping our head on a swivel.

I had all but forgotten about what was going on in Wisconsin when the Earthquake hit.
Obviously the situation in Japan is a little more pressing.
I just don't pay attention to the media outside what pops up in my FB news feed,...which is NPR,...Democracy Now and Huffinton Post. |

I believe people should have to pay extra to have access to clebrity gossip and fashion shows. Having known people who actually believe that to be dire reality, it's pretty obvious that people have lost the ability to make responsible free-market decisions on such things.
Foreign news feeds are more often real news, and according to American idiots are therefore "anti-American" alarmists. If it's not patriotic flag-waving, it must be The Enemy. Makes me sick.

The news is flooded with the BS, but if no one cared, it would not. We're the ones calling the shots, we're tuning in to the garbage and propagating it. The sooner we start demanding the real news of the world and not the junk food equivalent, the sooner we'll get it. Until then, you control the tv dial, and which websites you access.

Lately, going with my wife to take the dog for a walk seems to be doing that for me.

As a former journalist, I continue to believe there are a lot of good professionals still in the field. But their numbers are dwindling (in part due to the economics of the business), and you're far less likely to find them on TV. I've been visiting the NY Times' site--as well as CNN's site--and their priorities are nothing like what is described in the OP.

-Mike | That's what's meant by "quality time". We all need it, and need to make room for it, no matter how pressing other things can seem to get at times.

I know all that other stuff is going on too and its important to me, but the news is such a downer. I don't like turning on my TV to get depressed or angry about politics.

I'm a huge pro football fan from way back and I am seriously bummed at the prospects of possibly not having a 2011 NFL season. OTOH if things keep going the way they are around the world, then whether there's pro football on the tube in September may not seem all that important. |

Soft news is cheaper to cover, and when your companies owner is in bed with the people in scrutiny you tend to forget they exist.
I wish you were correct Relic, but I have to strongly disagree.

It almost read like something you read somewhere (I haven't heard a word about the Oscars in weeks).
The sources I use for news are news-based organizations. They seem really good at it.
Look, we have more information available to us than any generation in history and it has never been easier to access.
And after you educate yourself on what's happening, watch a cat video...... They're grrrrrrreat!!!!
