Ubisoft takes DRM to the next level

Sign in to disble this ad
One of my guilty pleasures / secret shames (besides prog rock ) is Ubisoft's Silent Hunter WW2 submarine series. Silent Hunter 5 gets released next week, but it will use Ubi's new "Ubiplay" DRM scheme. The new releases of Assassins Creed 2 and Settlers 7 will also use this DRM.

The fine folks at Ubisoft, who in the past have trashed your DVD drives with Starforce, will now require you create an account and sign into their servers every time you want to play. In addition, you must remain connected (via a continuous high speed connection) to their servers at all times during game play or you get booted from your game.

Still on dialup? Too bad.

Don't have a rock solid high speed connection? Too bad.

Are you in the service with limited web access? Too bad.

Are Ubisoft''s servers down or overwhelmed? Too bad.

Welcome to the future!

As fdeck says...

I dont know why they still try to protect their games, there is always a guy whos smarter and has much more knowledge than their whole security developement section guys toghether.

If instead of making retarded security systems they would focus at offering their games at lower prices and suply good internet contents, like good multiplayer and new features every now and then, I bet they would get a lot more sales than by just trying to make a game uncorruptible...

Once again, the pirated versions are more useful and playable than the one you PAY MONEY for!

Not saying I am( ), but I'd like to make an attempt to download most games instead of buy them when the company treats it's customers like criminals. Just a way to stick it to the man.

In the case of Silent Hunter 3, I bought the game (to support the franchise), but wound up having to remove it and run a cracked version when the Starforce protection would no longer allow the game I paid for (and had the DVD for) to load.

I love the fact that this isn't going to bother pirates in the slightest. They'll find a way to get around it within a month at the most. Meanwhile, potential customers are going to look at this and pass. Hell, if the games good enough, it might even turn some of those potential customers to piracy to avoid this ridiculous software.

Who is running these companies?

If anything, this is will make me more likely to download it instead of purchasing an actual copy.

Why the hell are companies willing to go so far out of their way to make console gamers happy, but are perfectly willing to screw over PC gamers (i.e. the original gamers)?

The MW2 thing was ****. This is ****. We either have to put up with crappy ports of console games because people are too lazy to develop proper PC versions, or just not get a version of the game at all.

And why the hell would I want to be using up my download limit playing a game OFFLINE?

I'm already reading today that Assassins Creed 2 has already been cracked even though it isn't scheduled for official release until 3/09/10. Now THAT DRM was effective, wasn't it Ubi?

$60 for a six hour game with zero story and ridiculous restrictions. No thanks. It's off to the bay for me...

I hadn't played a PC game sine WoW in 2008 until Fallout 3 on PS3 was so terrible to play. I went out and even got the xbox360 controller for windows to play it on my PC. It loads in 3 seconds. Voila?

Face it, PC gaming was doomed ever since developers figured out they could sell more games on consoles as console gamers are less likely to pirate games because it is harder to pull off for them and usually requires them to make modifications to their consoles. In an age where a game with the super-shiny graphics modern gamers want costs millions to make, PC gamers have become an annoyance, I suppose.

Personally, all I play these days is retro games, they just make 'em like they used to.
